Excellent! Seems it wasn't too bad to remove, though not extremely easy either.

Definitely keep us update on the 20H! Yeah, the 20 post limit is a PITN, but hit up the welcome section or comment on a couple of tank builds and you'll get there in no time!

excellent work my friend! The detail in our design is something I strive to achieve, but fall short.

My MTS runs deep. Currently setting up a 65 gallon, but the future plans are ever expanding. Once we buy our house, there will probably be a display tank (or even 2) in every room. Fresh and Salt. Built into the walls, and sitting on stands - coffee tables, end tables (hell even saw an aquarium toilet, but don't think I'll take it that far).

5 months and this setup has progress beautifully. Any updates on the current arrangement? I bet this aquarium has exploded with color as the plants fill in the voids.

What size aquarium will this be placed? (the reason I ask, if it's 10, 20, 30 gallons - I would say it's a bigger issue, 50, 75, 90+ - I would say it's not as big an issue). Ultimately, the rusty screw will change your water chemistry, but not necessarily in a bad way. Over time you will have more iron within the water (good for plants), but it could also tint the water color. My best judgement says get it out - drill it or cut it. But it...

Love the setup. Great growth also, @ 1 month! I don't think the algae will go away on it's own. You'll need to address it if you want it out. Full tank shot?

Update: I have the aquarium sitting in my living room waiting on the stand to be finished. I am in the process of building the stand now, but I am being held up with constant rain at the moment. Hopefully the stand will be finished this weekend and I will be able to add substrate and water. Still waiting on my filter, dang it. Also this weekend, I will build my custom light stands/feet, pickup the substrate, hopefully order my plants, get my...

Definitely a beautiful setup! Any updates after adding the shells and fish? I have always be fascinated with the shell dwellers, love seeing shellie tanks. Love the DIY top and lights setup, as well!

Excellent start! The 20L is a challenging size to go planted being so short. I like your scaping! Like others, I would avoid swords, they tend to get too large. I did mirco chain swords in my 20L and 33L (both 12" tall) with great success. I personally love the duck weeds and floating plants, but they do need a lot of maintenance (they grow so fast you need to keep them under control to avoid blocking the light to the other plants).

Be aware (as you may be already) the gold fish will eat plants. You might do some research on which plants are best to keep with gold fish and koi.

Yes, most definitely do some side-by-side reviews if you can!!! If you need some other filters to add into the review let me know (some of the cheaper chinese knockoffs?) and we can work something out to get the filters then maybe to a dfwfishbox.com giveaway :). Might try some "in tank canisters" also if we can. My guess, you would just do water quality measurements, then list the pro's and con's over a given length of time?

I too appreciate everyone's comments and suggestions. Personally, I was just looking for an alternative to the Rena XP since they are on backorder (been out of the hobby for a few years and was curious if something had come onto the market which was better). I love the simplicity of the XP, the functionality, the reliability, etc. I have owned maybe 5 or 6 over the years and never had any problems from any of them (minus one with an o-ring...

Lilies are always a good, easy-ish plant for most. What type of fish do you keep within your pond?

Exactly, that was my point with asking the size of the pond, hunting them down again later would be a pain in the neck. @ 900 gallons, commons should have plenty of room.

In your opinion, what is the best canister filter? 65 gallon aquarium, planted, medium bio-load, etc. I bought a Rena Filstar XP3 (a.k.a. XP - L), but it's now on backorder for the second month, so looking at alternatives. I have a lot of experience with this filter, but not so much with others. Ideally, the canister filter I buy would have capacity for future aquarium upgrade (meaning I may upgrade to say a 90 or 120 gallon later and...

Ah I see. I too prefer community fish. Sounds like your setups will be pretty nice. Looking forward to seeing your progress. I understand what you mean - 20 gallon is a hard size to filter as planted. Most canisters are too large/flow too much. I think I had a HOB on my 20L, and it went okay (not great but just okay). There are some in-tank canister filters I would try if I setup another smaller tank later on (very possible). Depending on...

One thing I have heard to help keep the plumbing quiet is to run 2 drains. 1 as a simple overflow and a second as durso style. Not sure if you have enough holes drilled, but should help with the drain noise.
