    It all depends on what you want to put in the tank. I've never used a sump with freshwater, but had one on my salty tank and I sure do miss it. Is the tank drilled? If drilled I would use a sump, if not then simple canister filter.

    I'm using eco-complete and turface. Never tried top soil, I'm to impatient to have to worry about stirring up dirt lol. You should be fine with your original plan. I've got some dragon stone and driftwood.
