A friend used to collect and repair these tanks. She disassembled them, removed all the old sealant, and reassembled with black silicone. I don't know what brand she used.

Is it an albino or a "blond" leucistic? Albinos are white or pinkish with pink eyes. Blond or leucistic females are pale yellow with orange or pink eyes. Males are marked with yellow, white, and orange. The reason I ask is that my strain of tiger Endler's carries the recessive blond gene, and occasionally produces blond individuals. The blond mutation almost certainly originated in guppies and was transferred to Endler's when the two...

I've never tried keeping a single male by himself, but I do notice that very small groups of Endler's (like a breeding trio) seem much more timid than larger groups. So my guess is that a single male will be even more timid. You probably already know this, but female Endler's are practically born pregnant, and can store sperm and produce many "litters" from a single mating. So your mature female will continue having babies long after you...

Agree on frogbit. Red root floaters have always been difficult for me.

As other people have said, some fish really like to eat it. It also is great for absorbing excess nitrogen, acting as a biological filter. And if your lights are too bright, it will shade the tank, reduce algae, and create dim conditions for fish that like low light. Do I have in in any of my tanks? No! I don't like the way it looks, it sticks to everything, gets transferred to every tank you own, and is really difficult to eradicate. ...

I've never heard of the filter or the seltzer technique before. Does the seltzer work on anything else?

The bioload question is an interesting one. A planted tank with lots of healthy growing plants (including some fast growing emersed species) will support a greater number of fish than an unplanted tank will, given the same level of maintenance. This is because plants remove toxic waste products (ammonium, nitrites, and nitrates) from the fish and use them as fertilizer. Most species of aquatic plants actually prefer ammonium over the...

Interesting build! What is the white PVC pipe in the back of the rock wall? I bet that H. c. angustifolia does very well emersed. I have that plant in my 40g, and it regularly grows out of the water, sometimes even flowering above the tank.

Plant Lady, yes it is common for hybrids to show up in stores unless the store is careful about who they buy from. If you are really interested in "pure" Endler's it is best to buy from a specialist.

Your fish looks a lot like the "tiger Endler's" I raise. I put that in quotes because tiger Endler's are believed to come from an accidental hybridization of a female Endler's and a male snakeskin guppy. The tigers are intermediate in size between pure Endler's and the large fancy guppies. And the males show color when very young and continue to grow even after they are well colored. He is a nice looking fish.

It would definitely help the fish. And you could set the timer to turn the air off a couple of hours before the lights come on. That way you would still get some build up of natural CO2, but not a whole night's worth. I considered doing this in my tank with the problem, but opted to use a little skimmer instead. It is an open top tank, and the skimmer keeps the water surface clean while giving some more flow.

I've had a similar problem of fish (including Boeseman's rainbowfish) developing respiratory distress overnight in a heavily planted tank. I don't know if the pH was a factor, but when I increased water flow and aeration at night the problem was solved. The tank has a large fish population.

I bred this species by accident in a quarantine tank before they went into their permanent home. I had a group of 5 in a 15 gallon tank. They were in the 1 to 1.5" inch size range. None of the females looked gravid, and although I saw a little spawning behavior, I didn't think it would come to anything. After I moved them to their permanent home (a 75 like yours) I left the quarantine tank set up but with no other fish in it. A week or so...
