    A soil substrate with a cap of simple gravel or pool filter sand gives excellent results and is very inexpensive. This is the basis of the Walstad method, a.k.a. natural planted tank, El Natural, etc. There is a whole forum devoted to it at APC:

    Probably more damaging then heat and cold is UV light. If the tank was kept out of sunlight, I would be more inclined to trust it.

    Yes, the LEDs fit the same standard size socket for all screw-in bulbs. The CFLs work really well, and I still have a bunch of them. But I'm replacing them with LEDs as they wear out. The LEDs produce less heat than the CFLs.
