Many species of rainbowfish do well with the same water chemistry as Rift Lake cichlids.

I have some that are really old, at least several years. I have not measured PAR under them since they were new, but the plant growth remains good. Keep in mind I have low to medium light tanks, and the CFLs are over my shallow tanks for the most part.

I don't think you can find a adequate LED fixture, even DIY, for $30. Please, someone prove me wrong.

Michael replied to a thread LED Light Question in Equipment
For my low-light shallow planted tanks, I use the Stingray. Most of the LEDs are 7000K, with some actinic and red. The overall color temperature is probably about 6500K The Stingray has a narrow beam angle. One fixture is enough for a 20 long, but I need two over my 40 breeder. Another reason I like the Stingray is that it is very thin and unobtrusive. For my medium light 75, I use the Planted Plus. It has the same mix of LEDs and color...

Color perception is very subjective, but to my eye the Finnex fixtures look good. If you are not growing plants, you could try the inexpensive Stingray model.

What type of bettas are you keeping now? There are so many new varieties I am perpetually confused, LOL.

I believe there is an article on this somewhere on Aquatic Plant Central but you would have to do a search for it.

Don't forget the common plecos that were bought along with the oscars to "clean up" after them. Surprisingly, my LFS says that they can almost always sell large oscars and plecos.

Yes on bringing plants. For fish and snails, it is better to set up a trade (or gift) with another member ahead of time. Conditions at the plant swap may or may not be suitable for animals, and we don't want any harm to come to them.

Forgive if I've missed something, but is this for salt water or fresh?

If you are interested in plants, join DFW Aquatic Plant Club (DFW APC). There is a plant swap at every meeting for members. There are always lots of extra plants, so even if you don't have plants to trade you can always take some home.
