You are more then welcome to argue semantics... but...

Tilapia, Family CichlidaeAll species of genera Tilapia, Oreochromis and Saratherodon

http://wapedia.mobi/en/Tilapia_(genus)

I guess everything is up for interpretation but my vote is illegal.

Duckweed is on the list as well but it is everywhere.

Somethings sneak in the LFS mis-labeled or just people being sneaky.

Most species are not high on the list of things that are watched.

Snakeheads for example are watched very heavily and ever you get the chance to buy one I would suggest you run away.

Chances are no one would care if you had a Tliapia but they are restricted.

I found buttikoferis at Boutique pets before. That fish was mean as hell.

I have kept a butikoferi before. Easily the meanest fish I have ever kept or seen. This fish would attack the glass scraping its teeth on the glass when you sat next to the tank in a white shirt. Not sure why white set him off, but it sure did. I could not keep anything in the tank but a striped rapheal that I never saw except at night. I watched this fish systematically dismantle a green terror once. Ugly to watch him so methodically tearing this fish apart, and ruthless as he did it. I lived in SC at the time.

Texas is looking harder at tilapia right now, mostly because Lousiana is getting ready to do a big fish kill to get rid of the tilapia that took over a local waterway. Right now they're treating it kind of like zebra mussels - just trying to stop the problem from spreading but not really cracking down on individuals.

Really cool looking Tilapia. It seems like I have seen dwarf pikes locally, maybe at The Fish Place, but I don't know if they were the same species.

ya those dwarf pikes would be a great catch if anyone could find them..... and yes Tilapia can really take a lake over, but I dont understand why they want to restrict a fish especially when alot of restaurants have them on the menu, however I am going with a conspiracy theory to keep the price up on Tilapia since its almost the same price as salmon now! dam supply and demand!!!

I have seen and baught the T.B. here before in LFS.. I did not know they were illegal.. I seen a couple in one of the local stores in march before I left for the Philippines and would of purchased it but the others I had and enjoyed grew super fast and really big.. I had them with fronts and they dominated the tank.. Nice fish though. eat like pigs

As stated above-you can find T. buttikoferi in certain stores. Cren. compressiceps is out of season right now. They will be back in season for Brazil collection in late August.
