The key ingredient is a lot of patience. Go slowly. Research and learn from others' mistakes. It will save you a lot of heartache and money. Also, buy your stuff used. MANY exit the hobby for many different reasons. Their premium equipment and livestock are then available for pennies on the dollar. It's a great way to enter the hobby, already ahead monetarily and knowledge wise.
Good luck with your project. . .

Just started mine last August. Here is what I would reccomend. Like mentioned above, check out craigslist, alot of times you can get equipment alot cheaper. Before you buy anything though, decide the type of SW tank you want to have. Fish only or a reef. The type of reef can get more complicated, but that is where research comes in. The type of tank will determine what kind of equipment you will need.

the biggest thing is DO YOUR RESEARCH!! you are talking about a setup where you can walk into a LFS spend $200 bucks and walk out with just some rock! this is one hobby that can cost you big bucks because you didnt take the time to read (or at least ask someone). remember its not really as hard as many people think it is. just take your time cycling the tank to begin with.
