Is this fish listed on craigslist? If so, it's a stunned fish, don't buy it.

there are discus and there are discus, I have been in several shops lately that had some of the ugliest discus Ive seen in a long time, pure culls that should be flushed. I wont mention names but they are known shops.

You know what, I have too. The ones that I have seen have what I would consider to have recessive gene traits becoming exposed. Also, I have seen sick tanks with infected stock.
On the other hand, I did see two very mature, very large Discus lay eggs at a shop. Maybe there is hope for the near future.

Odds aren't good that this means anything good (like quality fish) Most shops really aren't set up for Discus fry. With the CONSTANT feeding they require and CONSTANT water changes... Without these things, they will just end up being stunted and/or sick fish.
Not being negative, just realistic.
There ARE a couple shops in the metro that get in decent Discus. But, personally, I would only buy them as new arrivals. If they've been in the store and on a central filtration system for a while, I'd pass. And, even as new arrivals, they would get an extended quarantine.

Well you did the smart thing .
If you want discus go to the breeder .
Watch them eat.
If there eating and something goes wrong you can try to fix it
They all should come to the top of the tank .
If you see dark colored , fins closed and stay on the bottom .
Say no thanks
That's my 2 cents

i have mixed healthy discus with healthy fish of many kinds, both small and large, the trick is in the word "HEALTHY"!. i have mixed discus with lots of fish that eat hearty, you just need hearty discus that aren't afraid to compete for food.
A good healthy discus isn't real shy or stand offish, they will come up and demand feeding just like any other good fish. I may grab some discus in the near future and enjoy those great fish

Oh, I agree that you CAN mix Discus with other fish. But, for a newbie it's easier/safer to stick with just Discus.
You are right about HEALTHY being the trick to successfully mixing...
