What kind of gar are you looking for? Florida spotted?
Fish Gallery has been getting them in.
DNA has a longnose with jacked up fins. I am not sold these fins will grow back.
I am getting 2 long nose pretty soon. That will put me at 5 gar....
Seriously people should speak to fish they know.
But depending on your footprint the 150 might be small.
Most get close to 24" in captivity.

I for one know nothing about gars except they have a long snout with lots of teeth. Are yours energetic swimmers Blake or are they mostly still in mid-water? The salt water ones I have seen while skin diving are mostly still. They watched me with those speculative eyes....creeped me out!
When I was a kid and they opened the flood gates on Lake Lavon, there were folks snaggin some MASSIVE gar's. Biggest freshwater fish I had ever seen.
The ones at fish gallery are just as nasty lookin and pretty entertaining- cool to know they don't get huge.

I have 2 of the Floridas in a 125 and they do fine.Gars as far as I can tell are not very active unless there are some goldfish swimming in the tank then they go wild.Cool to watch them catch a goldfish by the tail then somehow get the body into their mouth without the goldfish wiggling out.I don't know how they do it.I have had gars for about 4 years and they seam to max out at about 18 inches but maybe they would get bigger if I had a bigger tank or feed them more often.I usually feed them about 1 time a week(goldfish) but I think they eat some pellets also but not daily.

nah you know im not tripping what im sayin is ppl comment and thats kool but when it come to ppl talking to you any kind of way is another thing . now no one has to like one another but you will respect them now the whole reason this got started was because she simply asked me how big of a tank so when i tell her n she says not big enough but that wasnt a problem you got to deal with i really asked were can i buy the fish not the requirments to keep em:brandy:

:wha: ...when you're on a public forum everyone is entitled to voice their opinion whether you asked them to or not. Being rude to Brandy was completely uncalled for.

Ok... Here's my take on this...
Newkid- You asked where to buy a gar, that's true. However, there are several types of gars and depending on what you get, your 150g may not be big enough. The door was wide open for informational questions from the members. An assumption was made that you wanted a large monster sized gar to which a 150g would be too small. Had we known up front what type of gar, this whole mess would have been avoided.
Brandy- Gotta know what they are getting before saying a 150g is too small. I'm with you in that most folks who want gars want the big ones, but it should have been clarified as to what kind of gar he was looking for before telling him the tank was too small. What may not seem insulting to you may be to others. I suggest getting more facts before coming to a conclusion to avoid mis-understandings in the future.
Everybody Else- Jumping in with comments about someone does nothing but heat things up. Say them to yourself.
Keep personal differences out of the public arena. Take 'em to PM's if you must jab at someone.
With that said, let's continue our discussion about gars. :o

you know i said what i said n no way was i trying to disrespect brandy i was simplying saying that thats wasnt the question that was asked and as many of you know thats how one form can turn into sumone elses and nicole when you say i was being ruud how is that and you say its voicing your opion but now when i make a comment its ruud lol nah not at all like now the conversation been dropped she said what she had to say and i did the same now comes in the middle men hyping it up everytime someone reads it n gives there "comment " whats ruud or not but like i said its done so yal can continue on dwealing on this and thats fine by me have a nice day lolroflmaoroflmao;)

Lepisoteous can live in 120 or 150 gallon with the 2 ft wide footprint. They grow fairly quick up to 12" then they slow down to about 1" a year..
I used to have a lot of florida, spotted and shortnose...they become very common now...:D
I have a tropical gar and cuban gar now..the tropical is about 14" long and the cuban are about 15" long.
Both are the attracteous (sp.) species which are the same family as the alligator gar. They'll get to about 3-5 feet even in captivity.
There are only 10-15 tropical gars in the US as of now, they're mainly found near the venezuelan river basin. The Cuban is the rarest gar species. There are only 7 cuban gars in the US and I have one of them :)
In general Gars are dumb. All they do is eat. Their personality only comes out during feeding time.
In the scale of aggresiveness towards any species.
1. Alligator - meanest
2. Cuban
3. Tropical
4. Shortnose
5. Florida
6. Spotted
7. Longnose.
Try to keep gars with less skittish fish. A scared gar can jump and broke their back. Gars with broken gar are most likely to died in pain. Most of gar keepers euthanize them manually.
I have had gars that jumped out when I was doing maintenance and landed 7' on the carpet. They survived but it was enough nightmare for me.

One of these days, Stan will buy a house, set up that 600g monster of a tank, and then we will all show up for the tank tour. :hehe:
Wow you must have a great source to get you some longnose gars :)
I have even heard that they were taking Hikari food sticks already.
My Florida gar is pretty alert and will come up to the front when ever I come into the room.
