Well, I set up my 20 gallon last night with some black sand and some holey rock. Well the sand doesnt seem to want to settle. It's just sitting in clumped balls on the bottom and I pre rinsed it and everything. So I turned on the filter to get some water movement going and it ran for about 5 minutes then just stopped. I unplugged it then plugegd it back in and NOTHING happened, It didn't make any noise or anything. I even checked the outlet to see if it was working at it was..Did the sand break it? And will the sand ever settle??

You need to take out the impeller and clean it, it problably has sand particals around it. It took my tank about 24 hours for the sand to settle down.

Use the sprayer attachment on your sink and give the impeller section a blast with it. Let us know if you get it to working again.

Get it running again and run a pre filter till its settled, old sponge filter or wrap it in floss for now

Use the sprayer attachment

I do that all the time and it works great

I'm with arnold wrap a sponge around the intake that will help filter the dust and clear the water wothout sucking up actual particles. The sand takes a 2 day processs about 24 hours and you may need to stir it to get to other particles that are in air pockets through the sand, the second day everything should be ready to go.
