i have been losing bettas and cories in my community tank at an inordinate rate. The fish seem to have trouble swimming, but that's at the end. Seems like iridescent(Sp) patches by their gills, but I don't know if that's normal.

you might have some sort of disease in the tank. are any of the fish new?

I think I've narrowed it down to velvet or ich. I was hoping someone pretty knowledgeable could look at the picture, and say ' oh that, i've seen that before. it's...'

Velvet looks like a fine dusting of gold powder.
Ich looks like sprinkles of salt and almost always starts on the fins.

right, believe me I've been through all the descriptions. I thought the shiny stuff on the gills could help someone ID the problem. I haven't seen that. I think i'm just going to get some Maracyn 2 and dose the whole tank unless someone has a better idea.
