View Full Version : Weird white algae fungus looking thing.

i need help id this thing in my new tank. so far tank is doing good and boom i get this nasty white hairy fungus looking algae thing growing on my manzanita wood. it's only growing on the wood and nothing else.

at first i thought it was fungus so i got some jungle drop in tablets to rid of it... didnt work

thought it was algea... so i tried scraping it off.. it came back.. tried no light.. didnt work... tried not feeding the fishes to see if they would feed on it. they did but it came back... got some jungle drop in tablets to rid of it.. didnt work ... snails ate some but not enough...

tried changing water and all ... it's still there. and this has been here for over a week or two.

my nerites and brigs dont come in til next week and im really thinking of putting my BNs in there but since this is a new tank i dont know if i should risk their lives.

also thinking of getting some true SAEs but ill wait to see what is it so i can combat it better.

im guessing it's white hair algae but not sure. :confused:

take the wood out a bake it, should kill any fungus on it

ive had that before as well, boiled the wood, didnt come back

me too, good rolling boil for 15-20 minutes, then scrub it real good.

I boiled mine and I am still having the little white growth. Would a pleco eat it? or would that make them sick. I have a rubber lip, a sailfin, and bristle nose I can add to the tank, but I don't want to do that if eating the growth would make them sick.

i never took it out, i added some amano shrimps, a couple of nerite snails, and gave it some time and now its totally gone and havent been back for awhile.
