View Full Version : HELP!!!
So I found the fish I have looked for for about 5 months now at The Fish Place. Yay Me but there in lies a problem. I bought them but don't want to mix them with the ones in my 100g. I have a 30g but it has been dry for ever and not cycled It has a HOB tetra Just as an FYI. Get ready here comes the question.....
If I siphon water out of my 100g and fill the 30g with that water and use some of the substrate from the 100g and brand new filter in the HOB will my prized fish be ok or will the tank still cycle?
I'm pretty sure I will be fine but would rather have someone re-affirm
I have an entire bag of well cycled bio-media in a tank that has never exhibited any kind of disease and that has had every new inhabitant QT'd before addition that you may have if you want to jumpstart your system. Not sure where you live though. I'm in north Fort Worth. I'll be up late. PM me if you want to come get it.
Good luck with your fish. I was at FP today. Which fish is your dream fish?

I'm not sure. What kind of fish do you have? If they're big I wouldn't trust the substrate to hold enough bacteria for an instant cycle. Would it be possible to cut the filter media from your 100G in half and divide it between the two tanks?

Take the filter from the 100g and "clean" it in the 30g, should provide plenty of bacteria....
I just got home from Ft. Worth and I will be back out there tomorrow but I need these fish somewhere tonight. I am pretty sure it will be ok as I had to change the filter floss and charcoal like once a month and it was always with all new stuff for filter.
The fish not really a dream just looked all over for one and couldn't find it.... it is this Placidochromis sp. "Phenochilus Tanzania" (http://cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=1218)

nice fish. reminds my of the $30000 fish robots. :hehe:
Sounds like you'll be okay splitting your filter media and using the other suggestions. If you need this cycled media tomorrow, just let me know and you're welcome to it. I've done that before though. Found a fish without my Qtank running and came home and floated them while I quickly set up the Qtank. I just did twice weekly water changes and watched the water really well. Nowdays, I always keep sponges over my filter intakes in all my established tanks too, then use those in my Qtank when I set one up. I've been colonizing this bio-glass media for starting my new tank but that's on hold for a while, so don't hesitate to come get it if you need it. Good luck with your fish. Those are really beautiful. I had not seen those before. The Fish Place always has something super interesting and unusual like that.

Thanx for the offer but I should be ok if things start getting crazy I will do WCs. Worst case I will get a big hamster ball and put them in the 100g contained.

not really mine its usually how pet stores keep eels so they don't have to rip it in half when someone wants one
Ok 30g full of the 100g water and cloudy from the bacteria from the 100g filter pad now just have to let everything settle.

We use the water from our 100g to cycle all of our new aquariums. We also us Rena HOB smart filters so when we set up a new tank, we take one of the filter cartridges from the HOB and put in the filter of the new tank, so each tank then has one cycled cartridge and one new. We have had no losses with new tanks.
