View Full Version : I am so ready to see some blooms & plants
I cannot imagine living in a snow zone & having to wait so long to see spring/summer plants thriving. My backyard is so boring right now without my lilies blooming :( The one big surprise this morning was seeing this clematis blooming.

And since this is about pond plants, how about this for intense color?

My clematis has white blooms.......I hope the freeze doesn't get them this weekend. Still haven't taken my plants out of the greenhouse just yet. My hosta's came back this year so big. :p:

I wish I could grow a plant....
TV news said this morning that temps are going to dip down to 35 for a couple nights. That number has been going up & down, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed (and toes!) that there isn't a freeze.
A purple betta would be cool.
Most waterlilies are incredibly easy to grow unless you get into the exotics like a Victoria or Aussie lily as those have special needs. But get a decent hardy waterlily (or tropical), put some Osmocote fertilizer in a no holes dishpan, add regular dirt, plant the rhizome, cover with gravel, place in pond. As long as you don't have large koi rooting it up or racoons trashing the plants/pond you'll have a beautiful plant with blooms in no time. Don't buy the prepackaged/boxed up plants from a store as there are many people that offer quality named varieties for a good price online. :)
First bloom for this season.

Wow, great colors!
I have a stupid question ... how do you keep the plants (and fish if you have them) in your pond or container water garden when it rains alot? I thought about drilling some holes in that tub I am gonna use ... but won't the fish still slide out?

Very beautiful.
I'll sometimes loose the tiny goldfish fry if we get too much rain, but rarely do I loose the larger gambusia. The duckweed will float out but there usually is enough leftover to start it growing again. Don't drill holes as evaporation during winds/high temps will keep the water level down.

Thought you all may want to see a few of my favorite blooms. I have Iris gardens with about 300 different named iris, here are just a few of my favorites.
Sold the house, so new owners have alot of beautiful Iris, daylilies, and plants to enjoy. :)

Kat,
The lilies I got from you are about to bloom in the water gardens. I am sad to leave them, but will contact you once I get new house for more plants.
Do I need to do anything special to the tropicals? They survived the winter, and I need to know if I fertilize them like hardies?
Your iris are beautiful & unusual.
You should divide your hardies & take a division of each with you for your new pond--just reach into the pot with a knife & cut/pull out a piece with a crown on it. I would be easy to keep them in a kiddie pool until you are ready. The tropicals will be just as easy. Depending on their size is when you repot, divide, & fertilize. If I see pads at the surface & decent development at the tuber, then I'll repot, etc.

Well, we have some gardener's out there. I guess fish and gardening go together somehow? I also have a Clematis blooming as well as my Passion Flower. Spring is a wonderful thing and it is a time of renewal.

Thanks ... yes, I've got tropicals blooming because I had coldframed (PVC hoops & plastic sheeting) a couple of my ponds to keep the temps warmer over the winter.
