View Full Version : Is this normal for young fry?

The BR fry are still tiny little specks and only 5 (?, can't remember off the top of my head) days old. I syphoned them to the bottom tank yesterday as the other pair of adults were pestering George and Gracie.
In the fry tank, I ran an airhose with a stone on it and the babies are playing in it, lol. They back up to the bubbles and just as you think they're fixing to go for a ride, they swim their little butts out of it...some aren't as lucky but they just come back down and try again, none are getting hurt. These guys are not accomplished swimmers, still in that "pop" phase.
Is this normal, lol?

I tried for a video but unless you want to see fuzzy grey specks, it didn't come out. But yesterday, I got a fuzzy pic of a baby and it already has it's eye band, two other black smudges on it's sides and a hint of blue.

Aww, that sounds so cute! I noticed I had some new Electric Yellow fry today! I don't take them out. Figure the lucky and strong will survive!

My angel fry did that too. I think it is the current they are trying to stay in. It would be swiftest near the airstone, it's a good probability that they are staying near it as it would draw the food toward them.
Kind of like trout in a stream, they stay in the eddys near strong current, it maximizes the efficency of thier gills & with a simple flick of the tail, they snatch anything that goes by. With a streamlined body it doesn't take much effort for them to stay there.

Well, that makes sense...

Thank you.

try a sponge filter for your fry tank, after bacteria becomes established there will be lots of great food sources living in the sponge and the fry will hang around and pick at the rotifers on it all day long

I agree with Scott a sponge filter gives you the cool air bubbles for them to swim in and it establishes bateria and a permanent food source as well giving the fry a higher survival rate.

this is a horrible pic but there are probably 300-350 fry in this 30g , i just put a AC 50 on their yesterday for some chemical filtration ( that many fish make quite a smell) wrapping the intake tube with a filter pad using rubber bands. The survival rate on this last clutch has been excellent, IMO due to the lustar hydro sponge. I had the sponge in the corner but some fry got between it and the glass and were killed. once these go into a 55g growout tank i am going to silicone the hydro sponge base to the bottom of the tank for stability.
