So after a pretty crappy week of fish keeping, tonight I am going to do a lot of water changes and larger water changes then normal. So I was going around looking at the tanks, and looked at in my Apistogramma Trifasciata tank and saw the female was at the back of the tank in a different place. So I was looking at her making sure everything looked ok and noticed the male got real pissy and she was in very unhappy about me looking at her and I noticed the ground below her moving. She is guarding a butt load of fry. Freaking cool.

I had thought she was on eggs earlier but when I checked I did not see any eggs. But she got out of the coconut she is normally in and kicked the crap out of a pleco. I thought it was weird but did not think much about it. Now it makes sense. I am very excited.

Hey Curtis or anyone else what do I feed them? Also when should I pull them from the tank? Right now the male seems to be pretty protective but I have read it is better to pull them at some point.

Hey Congratulations They should be abel to eat BBS do you have a hatcher. If not look around at the LFSs they should have frozen baby brine live is better hatchers are easy to build. cut the top off 1 liter soda bottle bottom off another one save cap on the one the one you cut bottom off get some stiff like the undergravel air line cut hole in cap smaller than tubing squeze tube in silcone then slip that botte with lid into the one that you cut top off cut hole for flexable airhose to go throu and walla BBS hatcher. use the bottom you cut off as a top for the apparatus.

Thanks Rachel, but that means I would have to give them money.... I will probably just hatch my own, I need something else making noise and a mess for the fish.

i hatched out some bbs it was a pain, could be easier if i went to the hardware store and built a hatchery rather than a 2 liter coke bottle, but the bbs are so important in getting them a head start, i hatched 4 grams over a 1 week period and froze them in a little ice cube tray. after 2-3 weeks of feeding them these i just took some hikari ciclid gold and threw it in a blender after 3-4 minutes of blending the blender was coated in a fine powder ready for feeding. I also feed them frozen daphnia.

How would you have built one from a hardware store?

Honestly biggin, I think I only paid ten bucks for my instant bbs and it's a sizeable container, and they're guaranteed food. With that messy noisy bbs hatcher and the gamble of eggs you never know what you'll end up with. I don't know what regular brine shrimp eggs are going for right now but the prices seem to be pretty close from what I remember.

like a 3 inch pvc with a flat end cap on the bottom so there would be no need for a stand, drill a hole at the bottom-on the side and put a valve on it to drain waste/bbs, drill another hole to insert a stem for hooking up airline. I tried a 2 liter coke bottle and it was a pain

I was thinking about that. I was thinking about doing something with a 6" PVC pipe. My dad has a bunch of it lying around.
