I'd go with bristlenoses. They will eat eggs, but won't go after fry. Least mine don't.

If this is your 5 gallon tank I would go with something that stays small, like a bristlenose. They are very industrious algae cleaners.

Have you tried to reduce the algae with preventative measures? Algae needs plenty of light and food to grow so try reducing the amount of light the aquarium receives by putting the lights on a timer or move the aquarium away from windows/direct sunlight. Fish are opportunistic feeders so they do not need to eat 3 times a day. I personally feed my fish once a day using the age old rule “Just feed them what they can consume in 3-5 minutes” Algae thrive off of phosphate as its food which most flake foods have high levels of this.
To directly answer your question has you should try snails to eat algae and clams to keep water clean so that algae can’t grow. There are so many types of fish that you can use just depends on what look you are going for. Suckermouth Cats are great algae controllers for any peaceful or semi-aggressive aquarium. Ghost Shrimp are excellent scavengers too. I saw your issue with the frys but once they are mature you can try crabs as well. Hope this can help you!
Message me if you have any direct questions! :02:
