View Full Version : Cultures and fry food

So, I'm doing the breeding thing again and it looks like there have been a lot of advances in fry food in the three years i've been out of the game. I got the instant baby brine shrimp and the International Betta Congress sponsored attison's fry starter formula, but I'm old school and I just don't trust it. I know the fry will take the instant bbs, and I have a micro worm culture going but just incase, does anybody have any walter worms, or vineger eels or something I could rob a starter culture off of if all else fails? I know I'm good on food into the first three weeks if that formulated stuff turns out to be a joke so I'm covered for a while. Does anybody down here carry the instant bbs? I ordered mine off of aquabid but I'd rather not have to fool with shipping it in. Maybe rift2reef? I've never been there/heard of them before I signed up here. Thanks everybody. Jamie.

I've never tried the instant bbs. I used Hikari First Bites when I was raising my Angel fry. I think I actually got better results with it than the Live BBS I had going. My BBS operation was small time though so it probably wasn't the best bet.

My bbs rig was messy, noisy and a pain in the @$$ to try to get a good yeild out of. I'll try anything once though, and if it works, it is really going to make my life easier, and if not, at least I have the experience of doing it the hard way a few times to go off of. I'll try to post info as the spawn goes along as to how they are taking to the formulated food and the non live bbs. Should prove to be interesting to say the least. Jamie.

I use a liquid fry food similar to what Amon uses, but I can't think of the brand right now. it seems to work really well. at work now but I will post the name when I get home

Is yours fish specific like attison's where it is just formulated for bettas or is it just a general liquifry? How long does it last you? Do you see any differences in growth and fry coloration with the simulated versus live food? Thanks.

Never got around to it. The fry are growing really well... but I am thinking they need something.... I ground up some food and put it in there.... but want to give them something else.
They actually look like little fish now, I am happy with their progress.

I hope the instant stuff works out for ya. I know DNA isn't the best place but there's a couple guys in there that know what they're talkin about. If you ever get a chance try talkin to Cole. He's super nice and listened to me jabber on for awhile. And he saved me a from spending more money then I needed to.

DNA has a good selection. The people are just real eager to sell when I am there. I have been there enough they do not seem to really talk to me anymore.
I have been looking for frozen BBS, or something that keeps me from doing a lot of work. Pet-o-Rama sells live brine shrimp at a good price so I do not really want to raise them for food. I do not really want to hatch the babies... maybe I should just do it.

I think the stuff at DNA you put directly in your tank, its "pre-hatched" or whatever

Everywhere I checked hasn't had it. The only place I found who carried it locally was in Dallas. Rift2Reef said he's going to see if he can order it for me but in case he can't and you find it, let me know so I don't have to aquabid it again.

Christine leaves for work at 6 and after that is when I go out to look for stuff. So it will probably be around 6:30ish when I will be there. What does DNA charge for RO and is it buffered?

:confuzeld::eek: Man Whats the fish raising world coming to when Hatching live bbs which takes all of 5 min to start and you have BBS in 18-24 hrs alive and wriggling and all you have to do is use either an eye droper or swish the BBS net in the water they stay alive if not eaten immedeately and its natural. Shesh to much trouble you work harder doing waterchanges and such.:brandy:

Hikari first bites is a waste of money... I wouldnt doubt if that is what is swept off the floor in the plant, make your own hfb by throwing hikari pellets in a blender until it is a fine dust. I use Hikari Cichlid gold for making mine, it is higher in protien than staple

I have "Small Fry liquid food" by Wardley. It seems to be working really well for me and the fry are growing quickly, but I have never fed live food, so can't really compare it. It seems to be lasting okay, and from my memory was not too expensive, but I do not remember where I even got it. I just know that it is super easy to use. Just shake, open and drip.

What food did you decide to use and did it work?
