I'm setting up a new tank and I'm having a hard time deciding on a substrate. It's an 8 gallon tall so I only need a little bit. I was going to get Ecocomplete but then I found Baylee's Better Bottom online for a WAY better price. Does anyone have experience with the stuff? How dark is it once it's under water? The website only has pictures of it when it's dry, unless I'm being stupid and can't find them. The tank is for shrimp that are mostly brown and I want them to be comfortable but not too camouflaged. Thank you!

I just got some today. I will take some pics this weekend, so you can check it out. I am using it to top off my other gravel.

i have used them in my 10gal and my 5gal. i highly reccommend it. it is good stuff. the tank on the left has BBB. and the one on the right has Flourite. the plants loooove BBB. you will be surprised when you start pulling out plants out of it and it wont budge. as far as shrimps, i used to keep cherry shrimps in there no problem at all.

Wow, from the look of that tank I'd say it works! Thanks for posting pictures. I think my tank has about the same footprint as yours. How many pounds did you use?

i forgot how much i used but its about 2" high. you might want to use more tho. i think about +3" is good.

im guessing you got the 25lbs bag from him. thats more than enough for the 8gal.

I haven't ordered it yet, but I was thinking about getting the 4.5 pound bag for $5. The tank bottom is 12" by 12" and I have a rock wall that takes up a lot of the space. I have a good amount of laterite I'm planning to use on the bottom.

i think 4.5lbs is good enough. didnt know he sell them in that small of a package. i dont think you will need laterite.

After reading more about it I think I'm going to go with the Baylees sand. Most of the plants I want are grass-like and the finer particles might work better. And I think I'll nix the laterite because I'm curious how well this stuff really works. Oh I'm excited, I've never had sand substrate before!

It looks just like the original stuff only smaller, 1-1.5mm, like play sand, only darker.

An update - I set up my new planted killifish tank with Baylees Better Bottom sand. I don't know about plant growth yet, but so far the stuff totally rocks! Compaired to the cut up hands you get rinsing Flourite, working with this stuff is like getting a manicure. It's so smooth! It rinsed clear after just a couple minutes so that was a nice change. It looks great. The particles are big and heavy enough so they don't kick up when your working - like the Schultz Aquatic Soil I had in there before. I thought they had a good price - $30 for 30 lbs plus $6 shipping.

Sorry, we lost some people at work this week and I've been putting in extra hours to make up for it. Haven't had a chance yet to take the pictures. They promise me I'll get either Tuesday or
Wednesday off so I'll post them then. Yes, got it from Baylees.

Bettalover, the tank on the left, is that full of najas grass?

Thank you! I still need to get a black background, hope to do that sometime this week. I noticed today the fish are able to move the sand around. They've been going around making little mountains.

Very Nice! I still snicker every time this thread gets bumped. The tile just screams NSFW with this crowd....roflmao

Then I'll bump it again! Actually I just wanted to add that I swapped out the Flourite in my main tank yesterday for this stuff... and it's freakin' awesome, looks 100X better.
