View Full Version : How to clean salt deposits
I got a bunch of tanks today and they have a lot of salt deposits. I haven't tried to wash them yet, but if I'd like to hear me some practical ideas on how to deal with the deposits.
I know that vinegar is supposed to work. But do I let it soak overnight or what?
Any other ways?

I set the tank on its side, soak a sponge in white vinegar and place it directly over the deposit for a few hours. The more sponges, the faster it goes. You might have to soak it overnight if the deposits are really bad. I'd also recommend doing it outside because the vinegar smell will drive you out of the house. You also might want to cover the top with plastic wrap to keep the vinegar from evaporating too much.

CLR. It isn't toxic and it will take all the salt and scum off the tank. Just rinse it off really well afterwards.

Never heard of it used for tanks, but I guess it will work.

Warm water and vinegar... Mix 50/50, wet a paper towel, and put it on the salt deposits. Leave for a few minutes and the salt will come right off.

I use a product called Deglue Goo. It is made to dissolve glue joints on woodwork but it smells like vinegar and it is not as runny as vinegar. I think I got it at Woodcrafters in Dallas.

I use soft scrub (used to clean kitchen sinks) without bleach. Works well removing hard water lines.
Just a thought......

I've tried the vinegar/water first and if that didn't cut it, then followed up with CLR.
I've had some tanks that I never could completely remove the white deposit coating, but once they were full of water, you usually can see them anyway.
