Brandy suggested I post this. If any of you guys regularly feed any of your fish beefheart, you can get it at Walmart waaaay cheaper than getting it from the LFS. Its about $3 for over a pound of meat. Trim the fat, freeze it, and just use a cheese grater on it when you are ready to feed. Or you can grind it then freeze it into portions. One "log" will last me about three months until it gets freezer burn and I have to throw it away and buy a fresh one. The killis love me for it though :) Hope this helps someone!
i used to get them for 99 cents

I have never seen it at Walmart around here. I have to go to Sack N Save in Denton. I use it when I am hunting with my hawk.
The mexican markets usually have it also.

Well, it doesn't matter what grocery store you get it from, it's still cheaper than the stuff at the LFS, and it's the same thing :p: :hehe:

Its next to the beef tongue :p:. Or you might look in the frozen foods. I bought it for my Son that used it to fish with. Hey it works, he caught a lot of large catfish!

Actually you should make a mix for your fish with beef heart. What your buying at the lfs has more than just beef heart in it.

What would you suggest mixing with it? Sometimes, I will mix some flake food with it.

Any hispanic market/store should carry beefheart and they usually will have it trimmed in strips. If you don't see it in the meat section, just ask the butcher and I'll bet they can fix you up.
I don't feed my discus beefheart anymore, but when I did I usually got mine at Fiesta. I pretty much used the same recipe as Texasdiscusman. Fiesta also sells a frozen seafood mix that includes squid, muscles, clams, and other yucky fishy stuff like that...run it through a grinder and it's all good. I always found that the less you add to the basic heart and seafood mix, the better. Some add eggs and banannas but I never found that my fish appreciated those ingredients.
These days it's pretty much frozen bloodworms in the morning and tetra bits in the evening...pretty simple and I have not seen a difference in their growth vs. beefheart. Also, this regimine requires less waterchanges.

Because every things is raw.Fresh water fish could introduce parasites to your fish
I hear ya Kathy but I 4 spawns pulled off parents. One more set of wigglers and another ready to hatch. So feeding that many fish it is a lot cheaper to feed beef heart just in case you for got the demands of raising Discus. LOL Also babies get 2 water changes a day of 90% each time

In my beef heart mix I put bananas, Garlic, Liquid Bird Vitamin, Shrimp, Beef heart, Flake Food, Grind and mix everything together. Then I bag everything into freezer bags and lay it flat so i can break it off to feed my fish. I buy the beef heart buy the case at my local grocery store. I just have them order me a case. So I make about 15 pounds at a time.

I can definitely appreciate that. Mine are all adults now and just big, fat, and hangin out so I can get by with feeding what I am and doing less waterchanges. Thank goodness, I have no interest in breeding them anymore.
Breeding and raising fry, now that's a whole nother deal! Actually, I found California blackworms to be the best fry food. If you take care of the worms and keep them clean, you will see awesome growth on your fry; however, they are not necessarily cost effective. I spoiled my fry on those and in turn they turned their noses up at beefheart. However, I have seen some nice looking discus raised on beefeart too.

I quit using black worms Kathy.Got tired of fighting Capillaria.I got so tired of a few months ago that I culled about 150 fry.Not going back to them.I also know another person who sent there worms in and had them tested. They were filled with capillaria

I haven't fed them in years but I never had any problems with the CBW's that I got from Dan in CA.
For a while I grew my own red wigglers and my discus went nuts over them. I fed the baby worms to the juv's. I kept the worm culture indoors so they produced year round and for the most part they were not hard to manage. The only hard part was remembering to feed the worms. I eventually changed out their bedding/soil and something in there must not have agreed with them because they all ended up dying off.
