I was at USA Aquarium today they had 3 Zebra Plecos. Cool little guys about 2.5 in.
Really neat looking fish. If you get a chance you should check them out. $250 puts them out my price range but they were pretty neat.

Has to do with where they come from and they are not easy to breed from what I have heard.
Plus they are really cool....
And yes $250 each.

Oh I would love to have one, and one of these days I might actually be crazy enough to do it, but I know what would happen. It would die the next freaking day. Or the day after the waranty went out. Just my luck. And then I would be sad because I would miss it. lol, and be too poor to buy another

Well i'm full blooded southern catholic and can't justify paying a down payment for a car.... for a fish, that may or may not live for the extent of his $250 life.... So dont feel bad.

HOWEVER.... if anyone just happened to have a tank that was overflowing with zebra's, i would be happy to provide a good home for one. You could come and visit him/her anytime you wanted.... (they are very beautiful fish.)

I can get them for $150ish.
They are expensive because they are illegal to collect so there are no more wild ones coming in.
I don't think they are that hard to breed but i've heard otherwise as well. About 6 years ago they were cheaper than gold nugget plecos.
$250 is beyond ridiculous for any store to try to sell them at.
A friend of mine has 18 of them and I have 9 of them. Mine are about 6 months away from being old enough to breed.
When I do have babies available I will probably sell them for around $75-$100 each until I recoup my initial investment.
Hopefully once the wild population is back to safe levels they will let them be collected again.

Dig through all this and see why they are banned from export out of Brazil, hence the price insanity. Also while they breed in captivity, I'm told spawns are generally small, 10 to 30 max as a rule, and anyone breeding them has a waiting list a mile long.

The Belo Monte Dam is a cause of great concern among locals and environmentalists as well as collectors along the Xingu.
Oh, and by the way, $150 or so is a very good price in todays L046 world.
