I finally caught my demasoni that was holding fry and i put her in a breeder net inside my 10 gallon. I put her in there because I have 8 fry frontosas in there right now and I want her to spit them out. I've had the lights off and I've left her alone for hours and I just went in there to see if she spit them out and there are only three small fry! Does that seem about right????? How long before I should get her out of the breeder net and back into the tank?

Na... Three sounds way too low. Were they free swimming or did they still have their egg sacks?

free swimming...I had the hardest time catching her! What worries me is that maybe she couldn't hold on to them any longer and she let them go in the 135. Unfortunately for the fry I have frontosas and peacocks in there and I'm sure they won't make it long :(:(

A few things could have happened...

She could have spit when you were trying to catch her and three is all she was able to take back in...

Or she spit before you checked on her and she scooped all but three up before you saw her...

Or she was about to spit when she noticed you coming to check on her and held the rest.

Are you familiar with stripping the fry? What I do is net the momma, hold her out of the water over the net with her head tilted down, and let nature take it's course. I dunk them in the water ever so often as well. May take a bit, but she will most likely spit them. If not, I put her in a 10g and they usually hold 2-3 days before spitting them. I'll leave momma in until she no longer scoops them back, another 2-3 days. During this time, she can eat and get her energy back before going home.

going to try it! brb lol

I couldn't get her to spit any out...she doesn't look too good maybe b/c it is so cramped inside the breeder net. is it ok to keep her in the breeder net inside the 10 gallon for long? i'm afraid to let her run loose in there b/c i have 8 1/2 inch frontosas in there.

I tried it but she didn't spit any out. I'm worried that leaving her in the breeder net is not good.

It's not the best option. She may try to jump or hurt herself trying to figure out why she can't get through the net.

I'd get a 10g and set it up if I were you. If she doesn't hold these until you get that done, rest assured there will be more. Sounds callous, but you can't save them all. Sure as hell can try! LOL Then put her in the 10 by herself as I described previously.

I'll to put some flakes in the breeder net to see if she'll release any more. In the morning I'll put her back in the 55 gallon with all the other demasoni ....I don't like seeing her in the breeder net she looks miserable in there. In the mean time I'll set up another 10 gallon for the next time she holds.

I've had two release in the tank when I put something out of the ordinary for them to eat. Last time, I put an algea sheet in the tank and she said to heck with the babies, I'm eating! Poor little ones didn't know what happened. We got out what he could... Like we need any more red empress babies!

btw, ive had 3 batches of demasoni so far that were 1,2,and 2 fry each. they start breeding real young and cant really do too many. also if you feed them well they should be able to produce more from what ive heard. they put extra nutrients into the eggs....if they dont have the nutrients then they dont produce the eggs. :confuzeld:

That makes sense. All my fish bless me with huge batches, no matter what age they are. Think the least I've had is 18.
