plan: buy large lake close to home(e.g. grapevine lake). use it as your personal pond:D

What a cool fish! I didn't know their eyes bent like that to follow the shape of their heads.
I also vote for indoor pond! Maybe a new island in the kitchen...

Most lepisosteids species maxx out around 24" in captivity, except the aligator gar can get up to 36" ish.
Basically anything BUT aligator can be kept in home aquaria granted that you can provide at least a minimum of 36" wide tank.
IMO, florida/spotted will get about 24" MAX, tropical can get a little longer. Cuban gets about 24" as well as shortnose and longnose.
My florida are about 14" long and the tropical are 11" and 14" long.
SO to reply to ALL comments, NO you don;t need a lake for gars. It'll be nice, but as long as you can provide a 36" wide tank, you'll be fine.

yeah, they go and catch them from local resorvoirs. still they're huge....
oh skip, just a thought on the g2g. he said that boy scout troops and stuff are welcome so why not a group of aquarists? it wouldnt really be a g2g, more of a tour. its dang cool to see the behind the scenes

Just saying it probably won't happen but you're welcome to try. I don't think the turnout to the Dallas World Aquarium was as expected, so I doubt one to Cabela's with one tank to look at will fair to well...

Neat, but I still doubt you would get the turnout that you would at an "Aquarium"

If you read my post again, you will see that I put, "EXCEPT gator gar", all gars species don't get to over 24-36" in home aquaria.
