I've tried it both ways. Mine are much happier with blanched, and the small fry like it cooked.

thanks for googling it for me but i have already done that and most of the info returned is intended for people blanching zuchinni for people not plecos......and the info i found on blanching for plecos was unsatisfactory...i even spent 90 seconds searching this site for blanch, blanched and blanching.....
so this thread is warranted out of need not lazyness

Ahhh.... You didn't mention that tidbit. lol I'd say the blanching times are the same as with people food. Mine do fine on unblanched veggies. My little ones get veggies, algae wafers, and an algae covered rock from another tank.

I pop two 1/2" slices (zucchini or cucumber) in a half inch of water in a ceramic bowl and pop in the microwave for 30 seconds. Poor out the water, allow to cool...you'll see the white vegetable flesh turns greenish. I don't see the starchy substance on the top of the tank water when I drop 'em in, and they usually hover in the middle of the tank rather than float. Tried 'em cooked, fresh, and this "cheater blanch"...my Bristlenoses prefer the cheater blanch. My albinos BNs prefer cucumber, the brown BN's prefer zucchini...blindfolded taste-test (actually, they just fight significantly more for one or the other).

me too I never do...I just cut it up and put it on a clamp and put it in.
so i blanched some and a couple fell in the water and boiled for a few minutes I put one blanched and one boiled in my 58g with about 100 or so 3/4 inch to 1.5 inchers and the boiled is practically gone it seems to be easier to eat while the blanched is still being fed on and taking much longer to breakdown. I wonder if boiling them removes all of the nutrition?

I have a pic in my album of a gazillion ABN fry chowing down on zucchini that has been blanched/boiled for 4-5 min.

It all depends on the species on fish that you're feeding. Some fish from specific region of the world are known to get used to having the food fairy that prepares the food before the fish eat it.
JUst like how some amazon river fish can only eat a shrimp (seafood) that is peeled and doesn't have any tail.

Hey Stan, is your signature coincidental, or is it aimed at me?:tease: My self image is beginning to suffer at the mental image of me as a food fairy.

It's pure coincident...I was just being sarcastic funny (or tried to be).
On a serious note....I think a lot of us (including me) spent too much time worrying about things that aren't need to be worry (de-shelling shrimp, deboning fish fillet or removing sharp edegs of driftwood), while the more important things are being forgotten (water changes or lack of it..).
I am just making my point .....no harm towards anyone (especially you haiven)

I was just teasing you, Stan!
I second your comment about the water changes and would like to add that it's a bad idea to overstock before the cycle is complete!
