Both convert ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate though Matrix claims to remove Nitrate as well.
Is one better than the other?
Any feedback/comments...

6 of one half a dozen of the other.
The Eheim folks are going to tell you Eheim I have used Matrix before....
Honestly I call them both gimmicks and would rather do something cheaper....
i thought about going with matrix in my fx5, (eheim wasnt even considered due to cost) but didnt want to shell out the enormous amount of cash to fill my filter....i went with pvc shavings for 5.00 and never had any problems

ALMOST anything cna be used as media. The question is what you get for surface area per $ to get the most effective bio colonization.
Most pond guys run cut up straws or colorplast panel.

winnies fish in hurst, i think she had a bag left but that was a while back..
great for bio and i would stuff that fx5 with it

Eheim Ehfisubstrat Pro is good stuff, that what I have in my fx5.
along with marine grade carbon and fluval bio-max. the ehfisubstrat pro in my opinion cuts ammonia down, nitrite down, and nitrate down, well in my opinion it does it did for my tank.but man only thing is it damn expesnive like 25-35 dollars.i'd only recommend it if you have big fish. for a normal tank I'd use carbon and fluval bio-max/sponges/bio-balls/pvc cuttings.

How big is your tank ? what size eheim do you have ?
It's all about surface area...IMO a whole canister of 2213 PACKED with substrate pro will equal to 2217 PACKED with cut up straws/ colorplast and equal to 2028 fill with bio balls.
So it's all depend on the capacity and bio stocking.
My new bead filter will have cut up straws/colorplast, but the filter is 3 ft tall by 24" in diameter. I'd go bankcruptif I were to fill it with substrate pro

Tank is a 55.
Filter is Ehiem pro II 2026.
I have some substrate pro in it, split a box between my ac70 on my other tank and the ehiem.
Looking to stock the tank with more fish and really do not want to lose any this time around.

You're fine...just add some cut up straws and you'll be set...
Surface area is the "space" where biological bacteria thrives.
for example...
1 bio ball have a surface area of 10 sq inches
1 cut up straw have surface area of 30 sq inches
1 substrat pro have surface area of 50 sq inches (due to the porous material)
Now, let's compare the size, it'll take 5 bio balls to equal the surface area of 1 subtrate pro..
get it.. ?
This figures is only used to clarify the logic, these are not the actual surface area numbers...

It depends on your bio load...
1 pacu (messy eater and big) is bigger than 100 guppies in terms of bio load.

Stan so do the straws need to be a certain length? Or just get straws and have it with a pair of scissors?
Another question if i may.
What purpose do the ceramic rings do in the filter?
I bought this filter used came with one basket full of the rings, filter pad and the other basket i added what i had left of a box of substrate pro.
I think not for sure i have the pad on bottom, then the rings then the substrate pro.
Is this the correct order?
Freaking numb questions, compared to others on the sire i guess i am still a newb

Eheim ceramic rings is the mechanical filtration. You should have it on the very bottom, then your bio filtration (subtrat pro)
flamenco-t added 0 Minutes and 50 Seconds later...
the fish I have are in my signture.
You need another one..simply the fact that 1 fx 5 will not be able to flow accross 6 ft (your tank is 6ft long)
