Firstly I hope im in the right section for this. if not... sorry admins. I would like to have have yalls opinions on amquel and prime...specifically which is better than the other as far as dechlorination. a 250mL bottle of prime is about the same price as a 16 oz. amquel bottle (that is twice the size), but the prime is rated at 2500 gallons (per 250mL) as where the bigger amquel bottle is rated at 960 (per 16oz.). the problem i have is that this amquel rating is not based primarily on dechlorination as far as i can tell. here is what im loonkg at...

I use Prime for water changes since it is more cost effective. Occasionally I add Amquel Plus in between water changes.
BTW, I've seen a large jug of Amquel Plus at Petco that might be more cost effective but I didn't check the cost there. Also the guys on AquariumFish.net (http://aquariumfish.net/) say they use a powdered form of Amquel Plus at their facility.
talk about cost effective....

I use to use amquel plus I didn't know about price, now I use prime because it cheaper and treats more then amquel. you can get a 250ML of prime for 3.99 plus tax at plano pets.

x3 on Cloram-x
In an old thread we figured out the dosages when concentrated in water was 5ml treats 42-50gallons
I use 10ml for my 75g and 30 for my 215g w/sump.

Prime or Cloramex.
But if you really want to clean your water of many other things that no dechlorinator takes out use activated carbon. On the internet you can find a long list of "things" that the carbon removes. We never worry about them and usually they don't cause problems. But at times when things go wrong it's good to know these unknown substances where eliminated.
The cheapest carbon filter setup for tap water costs about $30 and can be bought at HD or Lowe's. It's a drop filter with a carbon cartridge. One cartridge can process thousands of gallons of water. The cost ends up being less than Prime, but the "things" removed are much more.
The housing (about $20):

The carbon filter cartridge (about $9 for a pair, once again - one cleans thousands of gallons of tap water):

Also you need to get a few fittings to hook up the housing to the hose going to the tank and the other end to the faucet.
One can also hook up 2 of these filters back to back for even better tap water filtration. In any case (1 or 2 filters) the tap water should have enough time to run through the carbon. That means that you cannot run it wide open, but you won't do that into the tank anyway. The slower the trickle the better, you get the idea.
Works like a champ, but I'm still paranoid and I still ad a pinch of Cloramex, haha.

I use Prime mostly, in the tanks that I use Purigen in, but I also have/use StressCoat in the others.
Does the Cloram-x neutralize amonia, too?

Yes
I read somewhere that prime and cloram-x were once the same company. Not sure if that's true but I do prefer it to prime if nothing else just for the smell.

And for the API I do not trust it not for the money and time I have invested. Small price to pay for piece of mind.
3 things I will not skimp on:
1. Heater buy them new buy quality
2. Filtration the more the better find what works for you
3. Dechloranator why take the risk
None have to be expensive just a little effort and mot going to paetsmart/petco should be the first start

yep I don't skimp on heaters either I just spend 35-40 dollars for another rena 250watt heater. I do wonder how am I sppost to read the themomoter though. the one that changes color. it's brown on 80 and 82 and it's blue on 76 and 78.

It's like a "mood" strip ... blues are cool, browns/reds are hot. The temp is the highest number that shows a color. If there's a color by 82, then your tank is "supossedly" 82...but I don't really trust them.

if you have 2 colors going you are the high end of one and low end of the other.
I have them on a lot of tanks and they are spot on with my digital thermometers.
You really just want a ball park anyway. Within a couple degrees you are fine.

ok, so as long as they stay 76-82 I should be fine?
