View Full Version : New guy looking for local enthusiasts' groups

Hello everyone -

I'm new around here and a pseudo-neophyte to the hobby. I kept a couple of 10 gallon tanks when I was much younger, but haven't had one in 10+ years.

It all started with a nice little Eclipse 6 for the living room, then found a deal on a 46 gal bow front that we couldn't pass up, this could be heading in a dangerous direction . . .

Great site and great community! Is there a local DFW freshwater enthusiasts' group? I haven't had a tank since we moved to Texas, so don't know the local scene much. We live up in Plano and have become pretty familiar with all of the local stores around here and north Dallas, just wondering where all of the geeks meet up?

Great to be here!

Jeff

Welcome Jeff! We're about as enthusiastic as it gets. Don't be afraid to ask questions and get advise. We are a active bunch and don't mind helping out at all.

What kind of fish are you keeping? Depending on what kind, you may find groups that cater to a specific breed or type. There are get-to-gethers (G2G) from time to time, but that's more to socialize.

And yes, you are heading for dangerous territory.... MTS (Multiple Tank Syndrome) has no known cure and is highly contagious. roflmao

Thanks for the warm welcome! I tend to fall head over heels into most hobbies, so I need to be verrrry careful of catching MTS . . .

Right now the Eclipse 6 is "in transition" due to a pair of dwarf gourami's that arrived parasite-ridden from the LFS and didn't show the symptoms until it was too late for me to take them back to the store. Coincidentally, one of the neons I bought from them had neon tetra disease. I've gotten plants there that are great, but I'll think twice before I buy fish there again. Their tanks and fish looked great, but more have died than have lived. But I digress . . .

The Eclipse 6 has a cory cat (albino aneus) and a couple neons looking for some friends. Hopefully they will have friends this weekend.

The 46 gal bow front is still growing. We started with a school of 6 zebra danios to cycle it, then added a school of 6 tiny (1/2-3/4") tiger barbs, since have added a common pleco and four cories (reticulatus, schwartii, trilaterus/false julli, and a panda). We're still debating what, if anything, else to add. We're wide open for suggestions, in fact. I'd like another school of something that won't get too big to overload the tanks - thinking maybe rasboras, another type of tetra, etc.

Any suggestions?

FTW, I've been lurking for a while. Thanks to everyone for all of the great content here.

Well, Jeff, glad you have you here. I'm the same way with my hobbies; I tend to go overboard and saturate myself in all the knowledge I can soak up on the topic. The blessing (and curse) of this hobby is that once you start hanging around places like this, you see everyone's fish and end up wanting to keep those too, so another tank comes in, and another, and yet another. Then those saltwater fish on the other side of the store start looking interesting. . . and before you know it, you're cruising craigslist for that next tank. :)

Glad to have you here. Can't wait to see pictures of your current (and future) tanks.

Happy Friday!

Sharks are always good. :D

Actually, I was at The Fish Gallery last weekend and they have a nice assortment of tetras. They also have neon cories which are as cute as can be! Might check them out for some good ideas.

Hi Jeff, welcome to MTSA.

I'm James and I haven't purchased a tank in 4 weeks. The support here is great, I'm not tempted at all to buy anything from the Fish Monger's section *twitch*, really!! lol Mrsadler there saved me from a relapse by swooping in and buying Andrew's 90g before I had a chance to!

Lol, I'm the same way man. I have to keep a tight reign on my hobbies or I go crazy. The other day I was wondering where I could fit new tanks into my house when the idea hit me: I could build stands to hold multiple tanks! Then I got punted into reality by my significant other... so I gotta bide my time and strike when the opportunity rises. :p::spend::spend::spend::rolleyes1:

Welcome to box Jeff. I bet you came out of hiding to get in on some of T's good smileys. Well good luck with that. :hehe:

People come from miles around to get my smileys. http://www.pushupstairs.com/images/emoticon/neptune/Animated/Travel/travel013.gif

Little do they know what the price is.... http://www.pushupstairs.com/images/emoticon/neptune/Animated/Thinking/think057.gif

I'm thinking of building some sort of rack system. If anybody has plans, please post in the DIY section. I'm looking for something that has electric and plumbing incorporated in the design.

Jeff, you may have figured this out by now, but there's a lot of thread jacking that goes on here. Don't take it personally... Means we like ya (or your post is so boring that we're trying to jazz it up.) http://www.pushupstairs.com/images/emoticon/neptune/Animated/Bedtime/tired014.gif

Seriously. I was driving to work and I was behind a black pickup truck that turned north onto Parkwood from Spring Creek in Plano around 8:00-ish one day. He had a bumper sticker in his rear window, and I left myself a voicemail at the office to check it out. Glad I did!

Funny . . . I'm a bit of an amateur woodworker with more tools than I ever use and a dedicated shop (see previous comment on hobby obsessiveness). I've already started think of ways to build my own stands, including ideas for a multiple tank stand. I haven't researched it yet, but here's a great site for woodworking plans. It's got about everything you can imagine, probably some stands there.

http://www.woodworkersworkshop.com/resources/index.php?cat=102

When I just went to grab the link it looks like they have a whole section dedicated to aquarium and cage stands. Probably should be in DIY section, but I can't verify any of the plans are any good. I'm sure I'll spend plenty of time browsing them shortly . . .

You know, I couldn't say what type of truck it was. I just saw him turn north on Parkwood and then it looked like he was turning into that BMW dealership there. I saw the sticker and figured it was probably for some new restaurant, but figured I'd check the site just in case. Glad I did.

Hiyas Jeff, welcome! (Sorry I'm late...been outta town)

Hmmm, a black truck, eh? If you had said black car, I'de have to admit it was me...I work in the building right behind the BMW dealership (AmeriPlan), and drive a black GTP...though it's usually a funky dark gray color (ok, it's dirty) but the dfwfishbox.com still shines!
Grrrr....I was gonna post the pic of my sticker...but I have too many attachments already...

I also have an assortment of woodworking tools, and skills :hehe:, but I dare not even comtemplate the building of a rack system ... I am still getting grief about the stand that I sanded down to refinish "so I could sell it" (at least that's what I told the hub at the time!) that's now conveniently under a 20L Growout tank

T, you smiley-smackin' goob ... you want a rack? You buy the materials, I'll build you whatever you want.

I still have the s10(black) but it just sits in the front of the house.( i hate when each person tells you this and that and you can't figure out what's wrong with it). so it wasn't me. I just have a t-shirt.

it has to be xtc(chris)

Welcome dude!

Yup- that was me. But 8 am? I've been getting to the office around 7 am lately...and it's bark blue...but it's great to have another color deficient person here. :hehe:

Skipp, pat yourself on the back for makin the stickers happen- clearly, it works!

Woodworking?...HMMM, wanna contract job? I need a large tank stand built and I have $$ and the design plans, just seriously lacking the tools to make it happen.

Hopefully you're not even contemplating building a rack because of the grief, not because you're concerned about your skills since you volunteered yourself to build one for me. See my concern???

Mine doesn't work so well. Then again, my grandaughter thought it would be fun to nab it for herself. It didn't last too long after that. http://pushupstairs.com/images/emoticon/neptune/Animated/Sad/sad020.gif
