I got a pair of Honduran Red Points from the auction a month or so ago. It was late in the auction and nobody was bidding on them, so softy me got them for $3 if I recall correctly. This pair has quickly become my favorite. These two have been the most lovey dovey fish I've ever seen. I had them in my 180 long and they were always within eyesight of each other, but kept to one part of the tank. They seemed content, but I noticed a bit of rubbing and shaking, so Sunday, I put them in my 20long with some small juvies until I could get another tank set up for them.
I moved the female first. She promptly went to the back of the tank and pretty much lost all color. When I put the male in the tank, she hurried next to him and colored up immediately. They both explored every inch of the tank, side by side. The male promptly began moving the substrate, pushing it with his mouth, and by Monday morning, he had cleared an area all the way to the glass. Both were guarding the area but no eggs were noted.
Today, when I dropped breakfast in for everyone, the male ate, but the female stayed behind. A closer look revealed eggs on one of the rocks! True to their lovey dovey ways, the male took guard while the female got a bite or two.
I don't know if all Hondurans are this way, but these have been a true pleasure.

Haiven, I saw you had yours up for sale and if you have a female in the mix, I'd get them. I'd love to get them anyway, but don't want to disrupt the harmony these two have.
Mason, you just aren't right. lol
MrS, true. Cichlid babies are fiesty so they are extra fun to watch.
No new eggs and most of the ones that are there are white. Not sure there will be success this time, but practice makes perfect. :)

my convict eggs where white for a couple days (1-2) after i pulled the male out, then they all got darker and darker. I had maybe 10 of 200 that didnt hatch anything.

Here's an update- There were more eggs and they did get darker, but this morning, they are gone. :( Mom and dad seem to be as lovey dovey as ever. I think I'll set up their own little luv shack and see what happens.
I've got a pair of nicaraguans and they're really cool too. If you recall, I was gunna sell em, but Arnold never showed and they decided to have babies. Now we have about 75 .25" fry swimming around the tank. I don't think we lost any!!
so I'll have some Nice nico's for sale/trade (Oilcans!!) soon if not now for those with an available tank/storage.

I took all the other fish that was in the tank with the Hondurans out last weekend and put them in their own tank. The Hondurans started re-arranging the substrate right away, making it their own home. Yesterday, the male was cleaning off a rock and this morning, they were doing the dance. Came home and the rock is totally covered with eggs!!! Momma is guarding them with daddy close by. I've got fingers crossed that this batch makes it. I'd love to see their parenting instincts since they are so close.

You'll have to wait on the peektures... I'm trying not to spook the lovefishies as much as possible. Of course, silly me left their tank in the kitchen where something's always going on. Think I'll cover the tank up when the family is here for Thanksgiving. I wouldn't want some of those folks looking at me if I were the Hondurans!

Chris, How are your Acaras doin? I'm down to just 2 of the ones from JFP, and this morning one looked like it might be floating by the time I get home tonight :( The other 5 are still doing well, decided they are Dorsigera and I think there might be a pair in the group. If you have room, come get the 2 (maybe only 1) that match yours.
send me your addy and I'll call come get them tomorrow AM- do you have a fry box you can put the sick one in and keep him isolated- I hate for him to die.
Or call me, I might could swing by tonight.

And, continuing on with the original subject of this thread, :D, daddy had dug out several spots throughout the tank. Momma picked one out that she liked and proceeded to move all the eggs to that spot all day long Sunday. If she saw Daddy close to where she was moving them, she'd shoo him away. This morning, she's hovering over the new spot and I don't see any little ones, but she's not willing to really let me get a good look. :(

awwww she protecting the good food. i think human mothers should be allowed to eat their young.
tsunderl
11-24-2008, 03:54 PM
She's not picking at it today and I saw her spitting the eggs out as when she moved them to the new spot. She is hovering so close that I can't see them and Dad isn't allowed. Few more days and we'll know for sure what's happening.

congrats. so how many did she have?
tsunderl
11-25-2008, 08:11 AM
Thanks! I hope she or daddy doesn't get hungry. I can't tell how many there are because she actually has them under the air stone bar thingy. She's good at putting them back if they venture and the bubbles make it difficult to see where they are. I tried turning off the air stone and she hovered over them so I couldn't see. Grr! Daddy blocks the view if I try to see them from the sides of the tank. They really are great parents.

Congrats on the wigglers!

11-25-2008, 10:14 AM
Thanks! I'm excited! Watching them care for the little ones has been a real treasure. They are very attentive.
On another note, I moved the Red Jewels to the 30g Sunday and they've already laid a bunch of eggs. I don't anticipate those making it due to the tankmates grazing on them.
tsunderl
11-28-2008, 10:30 PM
Update- The little ones are now free swimmers! Momma is staying very close to them and only lets dad around for a few seconds before chasing him off. He doesn't act like he's trying to make a meal out of them, but she isn't taking that chance. Hubby counted 50 that he could see, and there's lots more that he couldn't see. She has them split in to three areas that's dug down to the glass.
The red jewel eggs didn't last long, just as anticipated. I took Mr. BN out as I think he was the culprit. I'm sure it won't take them long to try again.

Mom and dad pretty much left the little ones alone today and didn't get upset when someone looked in the tank. The fry are still teeny tiny but are free swimming and eating crushed flakes. It's amazing how small these guys are.
