whoo, moved the 55 last night. Pain in my :moon:. Don't have it set up yet, but have it in Frisco atleast. hard part is over. My husband was concerned about the 55 on the stand sitting on carpet in our apartment. He thought that with the weight of the water and stuff in there that the carpet might give some and it might tip...will that happen? He says he needs to cut a section of ply wood to set the stand on. I know a lot of you guys out there know way more about this than me. I would think that the weight was even and it wouldn't matter, but what do I know. I just want to make sure it is safe before I set it up. Thanks in advance for the help guys.

my 55 has a slight lean to it. not a huge deal. I have a flat bottom on the stand.

I've had a 55 on carpet and never had any scares. Usually it's heavy enough to level out on the carpet

I wouldn't worry about it. The wood won't make it anymore stable than just the stand. Untill the carpet & padding are compressed, it's liable to feel wobbly either way. Either way, it would take some effort to jet it to lean past the tipping point.
Persoanly this is where metal stands really have value. With just four small contact points, they settle quicker than a full stand would on carpet.

My 90 gallon is sitting on my carpet without any problems at all. Also had a 55 sitting on my carpet at the last house with no problems and currently have my 33 setting on that same 55 gallon stand, on carpet with no problems.

Putting down a piece of plywood isn't going to hurt anything, but if it provides peace of mind then I say go for it ;).

a 55 would be fine

IMO you would only have to start worrying once you get up to 350+gal

Tell him not to worry about it...

Putting it on plywood isn't going to change anything really, all it's going to do is make it taller and feel more unstable. At least without the plywood the 2x4 base can sink into the carpet and padding, the plywood would only keep it from settling into the carpet/padding.

I'd be more concerned about making sure it's level...;)

I'd think the shear weight of a 55 would stabilize it unless you have some real uneven floors or bunched up carpet. It would have to sit at a heck of an angle before I would be concerned.

make sure you set it up a few inches away from the wall because of the tack strip under the carpet...

the tack strip could cause it settle leaning forward and thus being very unstable... and bad news.

My 125 leans a little two the right... I never leveled it...

I leveled a buddies 105. Other than me knowing the 125 isn't level, its fine.

The easiest way to level is to use the water line on the tank itself... or atleast thats how I've done it in the past.

&#$^&*$&@$....I knew there was something I wanted to do this weekend when I had all the H2o outta my tank!

I have a 55 on carpet, the stand has a solid base, it leans a bit - but towards the wall.

If I give it a good tug it will move a little...but even empty, I'de have to really pull on it to get it to tip, and I've (unintentionally) tested that theory while trying to reach something all the way at the bottom of the tank in the back - seems the front rim of the tank is about an inch higher than my armpit...

My best advise is to make sure - BEFORE you fill it - that you have enough room between the tank and the wall for any/all filters, hoses, plugs, etc. ( I still have an AC100 sitting on the floor in the dining room cause there's not enough room to put it on the tank... )

thanks! I've got the sand in and I'm working on filling it up now. i brought as much of the water from the tank as I could...but it is all gross. It's super brown. I guess from the driftwood. I know it won't hurt the fish but it sure looks gross. however, I've had drfitwood in it forever and it never leached like that. Could it have anything to do with decaying plants? My mom was taking care of the tank but some days the lights would never get turned on, and as a result, most of my plants died. Any thoughts other than the driftwood?

If it smells like rotten eggs then it's more than likely plant decay

it has a little bit of a smell, but not bad. Will it hurt anything?
