Here is a thread that can benefit all of us. What is the best food to feed your particular fish, in your personal experiences. I recently discovered that one of my Discus will now only eat a specific variety of food (finicky jerk!)

I'll start. Even though I feed a rotating variety of healthy foods to my Discus, they prefer Daphina. Not a drop is wasted, and my German Blue Rams and Cardinal Tetras and Bosemani Rainbow fish all chow down on it. How about yours?

Anything I throw in the tank! Mine aren't picky at all.

yeah, if they want to live they eat what I give them. But I really want to try the new life spectrum lines, I've heard it is the best.

I usually roll with the San Francisco Bay brands of frozen foods. My Discus have started to really gobble up Bloodworms lately

My discus have stayed nice and healthy on frozen bloodworms and tetra bits. Occasionally they get some frozen brine or mysis shrimp but only the young one's seem to be open to those.

I used to make my own beefheart mixture but found that most if it was wasted, fouled the water, and in thun induced more water changes for me.

I find that the FBW's and tetra bits are fairly clean and never refused.

Omega One here. I was TetraMin but after doing some research i could get some better quality food for just extra pennies on the dollar. My fish seems to color up better with Omega One and the food seems fresher [moisture, smells, textures]. Omega One tropical flakes, Omega One sinking pellets, Omega One Color Enhancer floating pellets, Omega One blood worms. Yeah i got carried away only because Petsmart had a $5 off $25 coupon. After this stock is used, I'm gonig to try the New Life Spectrum food.

I buy all my dry foods from http://www.kensfish.com/ which has been top quality food. It comes in a variety of types, shapes and sizes. It's sold in 1/2lb vacuum packed bags (even if you order 1lb or more) so it keeps, and it's very reasonably priced.

I do get frozen bloodworms for my adult Discus, but I buy those locally as shipping costs would be prohibitive. I haven't bought dry foods locally since going to Ken's Fish food.

I feed a variety of flake food, but my fish mostly eat frozen brine shrimp and blood worms. I buy Hikari from Keller Fish Farms. A one pound flat pack is $12 for brine shrimp or blood worms. I break off a chunk of each and place it in a coffee mug and add water, wait until it is thawed and feed it with a spoon to all of my tanks, whatever is left I place in the frig for the next feeding.

Pam, I use a similar method to feed my Discus, too. Since my girl got tired of me using her coffee mugs for that 'yucky' purpose, I now have a dedicated mug! Last night I feed them frozen beefheart and they seemed to really love it. Not a drop wasted.

what kind of best food for cichlid?

It depends...african, SA, CA, HAP, Mbuna, Peacock, Tang, Psuedotropheus, Lamprologines, Cyprochromis...

as you can see I'm being a little sarcastic. Each type, breed, genius all have different diet requirements. Do a little research as to your fish and/or feel free to ask and someone on here will know the answer.

I feed my Mbuna 100% pure Spirulina Flake, a mixture of: NLS, Danichi Veggie FX, Hikari Excel, Super Soft Spirulina and Cyclopeeze. I "try" and feed the Sydonomutt NLS H2O wafers ... but the greedy cichlids tend to get the best of that. I "treat" them with zuchinni strips or algae/seaweed sheets once a week or so. I've tried smooshed peas, but they won't even taste it ... they won't eat duckweed either ... or spinkage. Oh yeah, the sick little bastages just LOVE that gook that gets flushed from the lines when I clean the Fluval ... naaaaasty fish!

The Angels & Khulis get Ocean Nutrition flakes, Super Soft Krill and NLS H2O wafers. They get FD Bloodworms & Brine Shrimp for treats.

The Endlers and Cories get NLS for Small Fish, Super Soft Krill & H2O wafers. They get FD Brine Shrimp for treats.

Pellets and bloodworms work best for me. I've tested everything under the sun. Beef heart worked ok ... but Krill they all love.

Mine are weird. They were used to NLS and Dianichi, but now they seem to just want Wardley Cichlid Flake food and 100% spiralina. I've been meaning to ask anyone if they had this same problem. They used to gobble up the good stuff, then it got to were they were letting it rot. I also feed frozen brine shrimp and Canadian night-crawlers as a treat.

Even though I feed a rotating variety of healthy foods to my Discus, they prefer Daphina.

Do you raise the daphnia as described here (http://www.dallasdiscus.com/daphnia.htm)? Anyone else feed daphnia?

Do africans like krill? Was checking out Ken's fish and wondered about it. My cichlids love brine shrimp, so maybe I need to learn how to raise them. What is the best way to raise them and where do you buy some to start?

I just feed them frozen daphina, I do not raise my own. I have heard of folks doing that. Is this process diffucult?

I buy frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp all the time but had never noticed daphnia in the freezer. Thanks - I'll grab some to try out.

I would stay away form Krill and Africans that is a good way to find a case of bloat.

Brine shrimp are too much of a whip to raise, BBS is not bad but raising them to adults is not worth it.

Most stores have daphina it is not at all but there are quite a few that do.

Thanks for the info about the krill. Btw, is Ken's fish food comparable to NLS and Dainichi? If you buy from Ken's for your africans, what do you buy? I am frustrated with my fish, because they started wasting the Dainichi and just wanted to eat the cheap flake food and 100% spirulina. Would love your opinion on this.

My Mbuna's dont seem to want the nls or Dainichi anymore either. Got some Hikari Excel just recently and i think they like it. Anyone want to sale me some spiralina flakes and or stick. Would like to see if they will eat that before i make a bigger purchase on that. Also anyone know where i can get it locally?

1. Sounds like both are feeding too much....

Comparable? Dunno, hard to tell. I have a ton of NLS and have yet to have a fish turn it away....

I mix in Kens Veggie, Cichlid and the 100% spirulina flake I used to get to make a secondary food....

I now have to find a new source for 100% spirulina flake....

I would order it is just cheaper. I have 2.5 lbs of spirulina discs right now and probably have some sticks as well if you want to try some.

Thanks

Thanks, Blake. If I make a trip to Carrollton soon, I'll holler at you. Was thinking about getting some crumbles, because they seem to not like the floating pellets anymore. I am probably over-feeding too, but I try to just feed what they will eat in 2 minutes, twice a day, but then I would find all the pellets floating in a corner the next day.

EastTxRn, let me know when you are coming also, I can bring you some 100% Spirulina Flake with those Endlers.

jguana, as soon as I get a chance to come get that tank I'll bring you some 100% flake, also.

biggin, does Ken's not have the 100% Spirulina flake anymore? I got mine from Jehmco (http://www.jehmco.com). I will need to order some more here soon if you want to combine an order to split shipping.

Switched to Ken's Fish a few weeks ago, fish all show color and are active/aggressive feeders. I picked up the "Premium Cichlid Pellets 1.5mm" for the Malawi africans and "Golden Pearls" for my apistos & killies.
