This all started with the Idea of eliminating some of the tanks in our apartment. I'm currently running 4 seperate betta settups(2-5G Hex tanks one 10G & a 2.5G) I figured that was to many in our 1 BR apt. Besides the 5G Hexs I got a Wally-World & they suck when it comes to filtration. So much for cheap tanks. They might be fine with a better filter on them though. But that doesn't change the fact that I have multiple heaters, filters & lights running too. So one day I thought why don't I just stick them all in one 10G tank with dividers. 4 Bettas one tank not bad but it would be a little crowded Next step Price dividers. Ok a divider is about $10-12 bucks locally. Then the thought hit me, "Hmmm... they look like crap...wife won't like that at all". Well I bought one just to be sure. I took it back within the hour because the whole thing looked like crap and wasn't the most stable looking device I had ever seen. I had visions of the thing coming apart in the tank & having my wife come home alone to the sight of her bettas in a 4 fish free-for-all match and fin chuncks fluttering everywhere in the tank. It was then that I thought why not go to a bigger tank for them and go back to using the 10G as a QT like it was intended. I settled on a 20L because it would provide the best hight width ratio of the divided compartments. The other decision I made was to minimize the number of bettas in it. I originally had planned 5 divisions so I could get another betta but it would look to busy. So I settled on three compartments & Darla the female is going to live in the 55G & the three males will go in the divided 20L. The betta condo is now done & I'm currently working on building a top & stand for it.

I had been trolling for a used 20L but ultimately I started with a new All-Glass 20L which I got for less than $15 bucks after I used a petco gift card I got for christmas. Lucky for me I don't have in-laws that buy crappy Christmas Ties. I'm not big on petco or petsmart but hey gift card, can't return it. Anyhow I headed down to Home depot and found 11X14 sheets of lexan. I could have used 11X12 but I had never worked with lexan before so I got the longer ones in case of error & bought extra sheets. Good move, since the first 2 holes I drilled were totally messed up. I found out that you can't drill holes in lexan very fast. It chips & breaks like glass if you try to work with it to fast. So to make the project go quicker I sandwhiched the sheets together, so the middle sheets would be less likely to chip out, a little trick I learned in HS wood shop when trying to get a perfect cut on cabinet grade plywood. It worked with drilling the lexan too. With drilling so slow it took me about 1 minute per hole to get it right. When I was done drilling I just scored the sheet with a box cutter and sandwiched the sheet between scrap wood and snaped the excess off. It's similar to cutting window panes just not as brittle as glass.

After that I just peel the protective plastic off and silicone the new divider into place.
http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q83/elijahtturtle/lexan2.jpg
Make sure the glass is nice and clean. Turn the tank on it's side and tape the top of the divider sheets in place to hold them while your attatching one side(I used plain old scotch tape)

I intentionally left a gap at the bottom of my tank for either a RFUG or in my case I'm going to run a piece of clear hose under it from one end to the other. I will make a filter screen for it and the other end will be attached to my Aqua Clear 30 filter. My intention is to force a current throgh the tank. Ideally I would use a canister ans have the inlet/outlet at opposite ends but this should achieve the same results.
Let it cure for about 20 minutes the turn tank over & repeat. Let the whole thing cure for 12-24 hours before using.
Supplies:
20 Gallon Long from Petco $15 after the gift card
2 sheets of Lexan 11X14 from Home Depot $5
Silicone: Home Depot $4
Tape: Already had it
Total cost: $24
The cost on this would be comparable if you located a good used tank.
The good thing about this is the Lexan is cheap enough that it would be plenty easy to add more dividers if you were looking for that too.
My End result will be a Display quality setup, with One Heater One Pump & One Light System! This will also give me the flexibility with the Stand to hide a CO2 system under it since it will probably be planted like everything else I have.

Just wanted to post an update on this.
I'm in the process of building the stand now. Mostly 2X4 construction which may be overkill for a 20 Gallon, but we have 2 cats that like to rough house. I don't want them knocking it over so I'm making it heavy. the other benifit is 2X4's are cheap plus I can use thinner 1/4" material to cover it which is also cheaper than thicker plywood.
Still on the to do list:
Put the finishing touches on the frame & add the shelves to the interior
Cover it with the 1/4" birch panels & moulding then stain it mahogany or cherry wood color.
I'll build the canopy last since I'll be doing one for the 55G also.
Other ideas in the works are considering an under cabinet light if I can find a contact switch that is operated by the door.
Here are some pics of what I have so far.
My cordless hand tools & supplies

Front side done.

The roughed out frame with 20L sitting on it to make sure I didn't screw it up.

Well the framing is finished now(with the rest of the edge supports for the tank).

I added two small shelves inside.

And framed in the opening for the door

I decided I'm going to buy a router too. That way I can do some detail work on the moulding & trim once I have everything else done. This will probably be my last update on it till Sunday. I'll be doing some training all weekend.

Got a new pic. It still needs molding & to be stained. I went and bought myself a router. I've been doing all this on a 8X8 patio in the cold with 18V Ryobi Cordless tools. I only have 2 batteries a minimal amount of time so it's taking longer than I wanted it too.

March 1 update New Pic but still needs: Second coat, door, filter tube relocation, design top.

My scatter brained "southern engineering" works. Here are a couple of pics of the intake relocation tube that show the filter running. 3/4" thinwall tube fits perfectly over the Aqua Clear tube. Slides right in. Couple of 45 degre siliconed joints and I'm in business. The joints aren't to pretty but who cares that will all be hidden under the gravel. This was the design I came up with to eliminate having to buy a canister system to get the circulation flow I needed.

But here are some pics of it up and running. I still need to add the door. But I'm going to let it run till the temp levels off. It now has a T5 Aqualight (https://www82.safesecureweb.com/webaquatics/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=CL58121&Category_Code=CLT5) from Webaquatics which will be built into the canopy later. I'll probably build that at the same time as the one I plan on building for my planted 55G Discus tank

Here's the latest shots I have of it. Eventually it will be fully planted and have the full canopy. Sorry I'm just now updating but it's been a while since I've been over here long enough to post.

Ok I wanted to repost this here, since I removed it elsewhere. I reposted it form my original thread on Fishgeeks (http://www.aquaria.info/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=59736&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=condo). I figure we might as well benifit from it here too.

I know you have a little one running around now (well kinna just laying there, but soon running around), so I was wondering what are the plans for the canopy?

I do plan on fininshing the Canaopy hopefully while I'm off on FMLA with the baby. I am actually planing on setting the divided tank aside in the near future so I can use the stand to star a 29-37G reef. The intake tube I designed for the Aquaclear was damaged in the move, so it has to be broken down & repaired. It would really function well if it had a canister system, but that I don't have. I've been wanting to get into reef tanks & both a 29 & 37 have the same footprint as a 20L, so they will fit on the stand.

Looks good!! I like the stand color.

One thing I learned when drilling lexan is to start with a small hole and then use a uni-bit or step bit. Perfect holes everytime.

Yeah I had a heck of a time doing the holes. On the first hole I did, I think I split 2 sheets of it. So after experimenting, I learned you had to drill super slooooww. All in all that's the only thing I would change on my "concept" would be just skipping the holes, since there is enough of a gap at the edges to allow water flow with an adequate filter.

What's your user name over there? I'm JoeHundredAire on FG. LOL I actually quit going over there much when I found these guys here on our local peanut gallery. I love that forum and as extensive as it is I will probably always visit there, but it really is hard to compete with having locals. Pretty much everything I know about aquariums I learned over there.

Today, the Betta Condo tank goes to it's new home. Ladydragon needs it for the new bettas she has on the way. I did a minor upgrade on it for her & added 2 more dividers. Looks pretty good. Ihope it serves her well.
Here's the upgraded tank with the extra dividers:

Hmmm, looks like you added some additional dividers?

Do you still have plans to build another one, or are you gonna try something else next?

I took the BC down so I can set up a 37G reef tank that has the same footprint as the 20L. I really love this idea. It now looks like my original design. I believe that ladydragon is going to have males in the four outer partitions & a group of females in the large center section. I will do another one in the future. I won't waste time drilling holes though. They aren't necessarily a waste of time, With just one betta in each partition, I figure that there would be enough flow around the edges of the dividers without the holes. there are approximately 1" gaps at the bottom of the dividers. makes emptying & cleaning the gravel a lot easier. If someone built one as a bare bottom tank it would be easy to cut the dividers to reach the bottom.

Things I will do with the next time:
Longer tank
More partitions
Canister filter
No Holes just gaps at edge or round screen inserts like they have in herp tanks for vents.

Hey! Thanks again for the condo. It looks amazing by the way!! I am so excited to get it home and set it up. The only thing I'm trying to decide on right now is whether to use black gravel or a more natural brown (like in the pic of when you had it set up). I have black gravel or substrate in all of my tanks (except my new nano), and I really like it. But that pic you have with the natural colored gravel looks really good. It makes the bettas stand out a lot. Anyway, I'll send you some pics when I get it set up. Oh yeah, Alyssa said thanks again for the light!

Thanks!!!
Holly

LOL, do a different color/style substrate in each compartment?

Yeah I picked that stuff up at Pet O Rama. It was $5 for 25lbs. Pet O Rama brand stuff. Basically it's just sand blasting media. I put a layer of laterite under it in my 55G. I'll be swappin that out for Soilmaster Select in a couple of weeks though.

Discus, Angels, SAE's, Brilliant Rasboras, Ottos, & Neons. I'll be adding Michelle's "Old Guy" Angel if I can get rid of the discus.
I'm going to sell the discus, neons & rasboras. Tank has already gotten overstocked IMO.
