Tomorrow I am going to Just for Pets to get a pair of the Red Eyed Puffers we saw on Saturday. New puffers, I am excited….

Did anyone know crayfish can live in high end (bout .009) brackish water? Tomorrow will be a bad day for him....

It was fun watching the whole tank chow down on a feeder fish on saturday.... this crayfish is pretty fiesty.... keeps taking a bunch of the bloodworms from the Gobi....

Everything i have read about red eyes, says that they are straight freshwater. JFYI:)

Yup, fresh only and are sensitive to salt.... Supposedly somewhat friendly but I have read a lot more about them especially the male being a pretty mean SOB.

Can’t wait, but I think I am keeping the brackish setup…. Got home looked at the Fig 8 and not sure I want to get rid of him. So he will probably stay….

And are not overly difficult to breed and the male will protect the little guys for a little while. I think they are going to be really interesting.

Picked up the Red Eye Puffer today at lunch…. Got them home and got them in the tank they will be in for a little while. It was previously the house for the Agazzi and Tiger Skrimps…. I thought I had all the Tiger Skrimps out of the tank…. Nope 2 left, now 1…. The male got him unbelievably quick. Now the Agazzi have killed 2 and Red Eye 1…. I do not think I am cut out for Skrimps.

Anyway Puffers look great, Just for Pets was great. I got a big male and a nice looking female. I will work on getting some pics uploaded tonight.

awesome that you have a pair! I have heard of red eyes breeding successfully before I believe. What is thier max size? I forget

Their max size will be 2-3 inches. They are one of the smaller freshwater species or at least big enough to see but not the size of a football. The male was not happy at all when I left but the female was up and checking things out.

Yeah, breeding is supposed to be not so difficult.

Good times.

These guys are really cool, the female seems to have handled the move very well. The male is a bit of a pansy.... He finally decided to eat tonight around 8 and went back to his normal color.

I knew they would change their colors some but wow, these guys change a ton.... really a neat fish.

So far the female seems to like people and the male just wants to hide... It is early still.

Great pictures! They are so cute! I've been eyeballing them at JFP but, I don't have anywhere to put them.

Be looking forward to pictures of them as they grow and perhaps breed!

They stay small enough, a lot of the reading I have done people say they keep a pair in a 20g. Seems a little small to me but for a little while that is what I will keep them in.

Oh yeah, my female acclimated fast, but it took the male a couple of hours...I wonder if thats the norm.

I saw you were going to get them... They are pretty cool. It took my male a little while to acclimate, almost took him back after the first day I thought he was sick. After a couple days he got his color back but they still are not eating as much as I would hope.

They are not big fans of snails or anything else really. Live brine has been their favorite.

They need a lot of cover, the more you have it seems the more happy they are.

did i hear it right, that you are doing a water change everyday. Is that something that you read, or are they sick? I have ich in my puffer tank, and i think it came from the Red Eyes.

I have had an out break of ich in my Red Eye tank. My female was doing real bad but she is looking better now. Still has ich though. The male does not have much.

I would be willing to bet on it being the Red Eyes if you got it also. I thought it was because they killed 2 plecos and I did not catch it real quick and the water was not in tip-top conditions.

What are you doing to treat it?

I raised the temp to 85-86, and added salt. My red eyes are not showing any ich, but they passed it to my South american puffers. If you keep the Temp at 86 it should take 10 days to fully clear.

I was reading on puffer forum to do it for 30 days but that is what I am going with as well.

I was wondering how your little sick puffers were doing. Glad to hear they are getting better! I have been lucky, never had any illness in my tanks in over 3 years of serious fish-keeping! I know my time is coming though!

I think a lot attributed to it.

1. small tank
2. water conditions went back quick with the dead pleco
3. The water temps had started falling recently and I was wanting to get them moved before it affected them, no luck for me.

My female looks great now, the Ich is all gone.... She is eating like a pig.

The after the male went carpet surfing I got a new one at Just for Pets.... They are really cool fish and the new male and female seem to get a long a lot better.

The male is really funny he likes to hide under the leaves and sorta stalks everything. He seems to watch everything.

The female really likes to come to see me at the front of the tank. I am very happy with them now that they are in their tank and they are looking happy and healthy.
