I can't believe live aquaria would put this up for sale at such a low price. Most people wouldn't never guess that this species can grow 2-3" per month and easily gets to 2-3 feet in a year..

My dad have 2 of them and that was in a monster tank.

I want one, but I don't think i can realistically house them...not even for a year..

Ooh fyi, if you want one in here, you can get them here...:D and If I was getting one, I wouldn't get them from live aquaria :)

I wonder why texas is the only state they cannot ship them to.

People buy them out of impulse, got too big and realized that they can not housed a 3 feet long fish and they dump them into the local lake.

While it's in the local lake, it kills or eat native species, causing some native species to almost or become extinct.

Same thing with pacu's in arizona.

Texas have a lot of lakes, more potential exposure to have non native fish to be release in the local lakes.

Here's a thought to consider..

Saltwater rays are legal but freshwater are not. Why ? because the likelihood that you release a saltwater rays into the ocean have less if not minimal effect on local ecological system versus releasing freshwater rays to lake arlington for example.

Both species will get to the same size, both species carries stinger that can cause severe injuries if not death. For all it's worth, they're both related as the same species before the andes mountain formed on the west side of south america separating the pacific ocean and the amazon river. Over the thousands millions years later, the rays that got "stuck" on the amazon side evolve its internal organs to adapt to living in freshwater versus it's relative in the saltwater environment.

You can get them for under $100 on aquabid at times. $250 is ridiculously expensive for that fish.

still too cheap...

If they put pima at the price of lates japonicus, GATF, armatus...then you can sort the keeper to a select individuals.

If you're spending some serious money on a fish, you'll be more likely to :

1. Have money and can provide for life.
2. More mature and understand the importance of the well being of the animal
3. have done some research and understand the need of the animals

You'll be less likely to buy the fish out of "cool" factor.

Heh this fish is illegal to own in Texas because of issues with it being released in to the wild by frustrated keepers. Just as has happened with Pacu in several lakes.

The first is a list of banned fish the second is the law code regarding it.

Anyone else notice that list said all species of crayfish? I think every lfs sells blues and feeder crays. There must be alot of mistakes on that list cause I saw alot of different fish there that I could procure in a matter of minutes very easily.

Perhaps it is the people selling the fish that are making the mistake? Last I check those writing the laws do not make a lot of mistakes in writing them.

Not that I agree with the laws but typically I would go with the list as being correct vs. those selling the fish.

Also remember the law code usually lists the family... In the case of crayfish it is family Parastacidae which are found in chile ,peru, madagascar and australia. Most of the ones in the LFS are another family that is locally bred from local stock, or imported from a species not on the restricted list.
