i want this background for my 100 but i don't want to pay the 400 dollars that petorama is saying they cost. anyone have a good way to reproduce this? maybe a how-to sight? or does anyone have one laying around that they'd like to sell to me for way cheap?

btw this tank is from true pecula and i know that they have a lot of rocks glued down in front of the 3d background. i just want to have that 3d background and then i'll make the sweet caves myself.

Budwick, it looks like a pain, but the results are cool. I think I may give it a try when I get my tank set up. Heck of a lot cheaper plus you get bragging rights. :D

Y'all would pay $270 for backgrounds and give up bragging rights??? Where do y'all work and are they hiring?!?! :p: Seriously, I've always been one to do things out of the norm and different from others, so I am seriously thinking of doing my own background when I get my tank. If I take the leap, I'll definately keep everybody updated.

i just dont want to spend a month or more getting the ph right because of the cement and dyes i used to make my background. i think the 270 for the background is well worth the 30 to 60 days extra that a diy projects might take... unless someone sways me.. which i'm up to..... so tell me why the diy way is woth the 2 months or so of water changes

I'm thinking of trying my hand at a DIY, but if I didn't have the skills (which I might find is the case) or the time, I definitely would look at these backgrounds as an option. Look very realistic and not to bad of a price for what you’re getting IMO.

I scored these from fishman76092 a few months back and they are awesome boulders, each weighing in at around 100 lbs a piece.

Yeah, that looks like a prefect setup for a grow out tank or something!

yeah, i put them in my 180 by myself, I drilled 2 - 1/2 inch holes and ran heavy duty 1/2 inch nylon wire ties through them and set them down on 4 small pieces of slate. very friggin scary when you think about dropping one and cracking the tank. I dread the removal when I replace that tank thinking about borrowing my friends engine hoist.

That sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

I would defiently use egg crate under those boulders.

How long did it take for the concrete to leach?

I guess with your 180, the plants don't seem to mind the concrete (judging by the success you have in that tank)?

fishman76092
11-12-2007, 09:32 PM
I ran brine in it for 7-10 days. Its been a couple years since I did them. I cannot grow softwater plants in that tank well...I assume its from the concrete. I also struggle to get the pH under 6.4.

AndrewH
11-12-2007, 10:03 PM
Dang, I didn't realize the concrete would cap the bottom of the pH! Even with the CO2, or does your controller cut that off at a curtain low point?

I assume you mean brine shrimp or are you talking about some sort of chemical?

poel_19
11-12-2007, 10:19 PM
brine...is the salty water he used...its to help leach out some of the minerals in the concrete

biggin

A LOT of salt....

Should read the some of the sites that talk about making them....
