View Full Version : Wild Caught
So we got the hook up on a place to catch wild killie's.
Megan, Logan and I went this morning with the goal of catchin 6. We were successful and it was a BLAST! Took us all of 30 minutes. We used a seine and a wife with flailing arms to chase them into the net. Caught about 30 and picked the best as our keepers.
Very fun family project that was very successful.
They're in a Q tank for the week before we move them to the community tank. Need to research and find parasite removal and whatnot...
Priceless father/son moments!! Thanks Arnold! :D

nice !! I would ask where that is, but it it sounds like a secret hidey hole!!:hehe:
Not so much- as long as you're reasonable it's not a big deal. There were MILLIONS of them out there. We only took what we needed/our goal. We also picked up a small catfish- we'll see how long he lasts, I expect he'll be HUGE in no time.
Also caught a couple blue gill and a soft shell turtle, but put them back- that wasn't part of the project.
I'd like to talk about other sources and other types cause it was a great family outing.

Sounds like fun. I always figured the water would be too poluted for anything to live in it. Maybe hubby and I will check out a spot or two.
BTW, are plaid shorts required? http://www.pushupstairs.com/images/emoticon/neptune/Animated/Stunned/stunned023.gif

Come on Chris you know you have to post pictures of the fish.
Clearly- I didn't run the camera. I was surprised she didn't get a picture of the bucket when it was full- there were 30ish in there.
Right now- they all hide, they're having a hard time getting used to a glass tub as a new home.
Come on over, I'll let you see em- and send you home with some more junk. :hehe:

Here's what my psychic senses tells me. I believe this place is located in Richardson, and is a park. I think i have been here before on a school trip as i remember rolling down a hill next to a large creek at the bottom. Who knows, maybe I'm wrong.

i think the people who know of this place are really trying to keep the knowledge of it's location to a minimum. they'd like the fish to remain there for years to come and not end up in tanks all over the metroplex. if you want to know the location, pm chris and i'm sure he'll tell you. just use discretion and don't put it's location on the net for everyone to see.

I have a group collected from that same location a couple years ago. The only problem I had was a major ich outbreak that took about half of them. The hardest part of keeping the wild caught is the first few weeks. Once you keep them giong and eating for that first month you are home free.

Where are you catching these? Looks like a great place.
Thanks Bruce
I'd like to find another honey hole with a different type of fish...can someone PM those that info to me?
I saw so many in there- I don't see it getting over done anytime soon. I hit it after a large rain, so hopefully the chemicals and yard runoff are all gone.
I will emphasize- I went with the intention of coming home with SIX fish- and that's what I did. Over fishing would SUCK!
Mine are in a Q tank and will remain there until I'm confident about putting them in with my store bought fish.

Chisolm trail's pretty damn long...gimmie a cross street. OR go to google maps, satellite down to the point and look in the top right corner for a "link to this site" and push it- it'll give you a URL and you can paste it here.
We are planning on checking along the chisolm in a couple places, so I'm hoping your spot coincides with one of those.
Killie's are doin great, they've gone thru a number of melafix 50% water changes, so I'm hoping they'll be ready for the big tank this weekend. I haven't lost any yet. WAHOO!

I was j/k I figured it was prabably something like a killifish.
Could it have been a minnow? Some of them are more of a golden color and can look somewhat redish if seen it the correct light?

What type of envirnment do these fish normally inhabit? Are they community friendly?

That is a very nice killie species, many of the local ones are dull looking. I hope we can share our native spots sometimes. Here in bedford we have the bedford boys ranch (city park). I have caught swarms of bullhead (maybe) catfish juvis. 1-3 inches. Also you can catch bluegill and other sunfish juvis in the spring and summer. I have caught gambusia also in a local creek.

China8USA what did your Gambusia's look like were they plain or spotted?
no- the 2 other spots only had silly minnows.
we put the killis in the community tank today after a long QT time.
Also, we grabbed a small catfish and put him in Peanuts tank. He swam straight to the bottom and lay next to Peanut- so obviously, he didn't get the memo. So far, so good- we'll see what happens. I'm kinda pumped to see how fast/big the catfish gets.

so, I know I am a little late to this thread, but that is awesome Chris that you and your family got to go catch some killies! How did they do?
yea, it was a lot of fun.
They're some of my favorites in the tank now. One has gone missing- not sure what happened, but he's gone- so we still have 5 in the tank. Too fast to get pics of though. they love the water coming off the filter and have no problem getting after the food when we put it is- so we are pleased!!

Planning on getting the same type of fish (as in going to the same location), or gonna try something/somewhere new?
P.S. have Megan shoot a vid of them ;) :D.
She's working on a pic of our Apisto Borelli (?)- We put them in our community tank and BAM! they colored up somethin AWESOME!! I can't remember where I got these 3 guys- it's been a while and I've killed a beer or two since then- wish I could remember who and where though...
Not sure if I'll keep collecting there or try to find another place- but it's gunna turn cold soon, so we might have to wait a spell.
