What are you putting it in??
The Pirarucu, a member of the catfish family, is one of the largest freshwater fish in the world. It can grow up to 10 feet long and can weigh 400 pounds. It is an air-breathing fish, a direct descendent of the earliest osteoglottid family. It is one of 500 species of catfish in the Amazon River and it's tributaries, which have more fish species in it than the entire Atlantic Ocean!

do you have something bigger than the 100gal you posted?
for someone wanting to keep arowana and arapaima, you need to do a little more research
next to the Pacu and Oscars at any LFS.

its alright, we're all new at some point
but seriously, do some reading
see the link to MFK in my sig, there are plenty more arowana and arapaima keepers that can help you get properly set up if this is the type of fish you want to keep. but be prepared to spend a lot of money and time.

500gal wont house an arapaima for very long

Pirarucu IS NOT A CATFISH. Pirarucu is an arapiama gigas.
If you have a tank to house a pima and you're asking on where to get them. You've got a long way to go....as far as learning about this species. My dad had 2 of them in a huge ass tank (30' long x 8' wide x 6-7' tall aapprox) back in indonesia. They get to be about 5-6 ft long and can consume enough food to feed a family of four in a month.
500 gallon will house them for a year MAX from 3-4 inches. They grow at a rate of 2 " per month. You'll have a 2 -3 footer in less than a year.
BTW, that big catfish pic is NOT an arapaima, that's a filamentosum aka paraiba catfish.

One of my friend called me "a walking fish encyclopedia" :) hahahah..
I just have a habit of memorizing things..I used to memorize (still do) a honda service manual..:).
I have also been called a "walking mapsco", walking GPS and other words that propably shouldn't be mentioned :) people would call me all the time and ask for direction.
I am currently taking Rosetta Stone course in latin at the moment. I am going to name all my fish in a latin scientific name..
I am a geek...

Arapaima? Don't those things get like 10 feet long!?! I had no idea that they were legal as pets. How in the world could you keep those in a home aquarium?

wow those are big. if you want fish like arowanna and need a big tank.
dallas north aquariums has a 675 gallon tank.(108x30?x36) $3,900 obo.
I would not mention in any public forum that I owned an arapaima in the state of Tejas as they are prohibited and would be exterminated if found in the possession of anyone with out the proper permits....

I know where you can get them and how you can obtain a permit. I did a bunch of research on the permit process when I was kicking tires on the 2600 gallon tank in Oklahoma in the winter-thats what I was going to put in there. PM me if you are serious and Ill help you. You must have a 1000 gallon tank or bigger-they will grow in excess of 2-3" per month when small if fed properly. In two years youll have a fish that is pushing 5-6' long.

here's a few pics of a couple 10 footers. JMO, You should never consider keeping one of these. unless of course you are rich and plan on having a small 5,000g to 15,000 gallon enclosure for them.

these pics were taken Thursday. you will need an equally large amount of food and filtration, besides just a big tank.

oh it's easy, just have a basement and turn it in to a aquarium. it still amazies me that one of the guys on monsterfishkeepers.com turned part of his basement in to a 50,000 gallon aquarium.
