Ok, I feel like a bad fish mommy but... I don't really care for Oscar and the convicts. (GASP) Yes, I said it! But, they are in the other room and can't read this ;)

I've got this big tank, ok a 55 isn't big by many of y'alls standards, with 3 fish in it. And, to be honest... I don't think that the fish are that happy either. I didn't pick these fish. We adopted them from my sister in law that was moving to from New Mexico to SC. We transported these guys from Hobbs, NM to Richardson. I bought them a bigger tank. I know it's not really big enough but, all I could afford and all that I have room for.

Now, many months later and they just aren't doing it for me.

I'd really like to try Discus but, I'm afraid that they are a bit beyond my uber newbie status. Perhaps I could move everyone from the 30 and add more angels. If I can ever find any that are big enough to hang with Brutus.

Then there's the hubby to contend with. The man is SO sentimental! If it came from a family member we just HAVE to keep it. Doesn't matter if it's ass-ugly, broken and useless....we just can't part with it *sigh*

Gee, I think I'm sick... after writing all this, I find that I'm starting to resent the fish a little bit. :rolleyes1:

I dunno... what I do know is that I'd really like more going on in that tank. 3 fish that are barely tolerating each other is B O R I N G

what about some one adopting them.

I'm not opposed to "adopting" them out or trading them. But, call ME b**chy, I'm not going to just give em to someone that's looking for free stuff. Sure, I got these guys for free but, I have spent quite a bit of $$ on them.

I'm not stingy by any means... just recently GAVE away a 30 gal to someone getting back into the hobby. They obviously knew what they were doing and I was happy to help.

A big part of the reason I'm not happy with them is that they are not happy with their living arrangements. Convicts are always fighting, they fight with Oscar too. Oscar gets so whipped up he hurts himself. But, I can't take all the decor out of the tank because without a place to hide I'm sure one of the convicts would die. Now, if someone with a nice BIG tank wants to give the oscar a home, GROOVY! If someone has a good set up for the convicts, COOL!

I've seen some people asking for fish that seem to know less than I do!

Listen to me... seems as though I've made up my mind. Hmmmm... guess I'll have to play the "Whatever you want, Michelle" card, Craig usually goes along with whatever I want. I DO try not to abuse that but, in this case :D

Ok, so just how hard ARE discus?

LOL, you need to go see Catherine at the True Parcula (they should be open to the public tomorrow).

She is the # 1 choice for discus advice IMHO.

USA Aquarium in Plano has the largest Discus selection I have ever seen in my life, literally 5 rows of nothing but discus fish in the back. Supposedly he is one of the largest wholesalers in the US, and I assume since he breeds them specifically and that it is his specialty he would know a lot. His name is Michael. If you tell him Eugene sent you he should take care of you.

According to him, Discus fish are a lot easier then a lot of people think, they just take a different environment then other freshwater species. Lots of green, lots of shade, no substrate (all IIRC). They sure are pretty fish though!

One thing that I would recommend to do is start interacting with your fish more...that is when I really started falling in love with the fish. All my fish have their own separate attitudes and personalities! My boldest and most rambunctious is also one of my smaller Geos! Everytime I stick my baster in the water to feed them, guess who is the one who runs up and nips at it right away! Whenever I stick my hand in the tank, the little geo and sometimes the knifefish and elephant nose swim through my fingers waiting for me to feed them.

Interact with them! Get to know them! I think you might change your mind!

Thanks for the info...

I do interact with all my fish. The african tank is the most fun... goofy loaches, red empress that thinks he's a puppy, etc. My 30 is fun too, my big ol Angel is Mr Friendly! Even the 10 gal grow out tank is fun, all the babies come running when they see me.

But, Oscar.... *sigh* Oscar reminds me a LOT of Ike, our blue Dane. They look all big and bada$$ but, in reality they are both big ol wussies! Oscar will lay on the bottom of the tank for HOURs after a water change, DAYS if I rearrange. I think if he had a bigger tank, without the convicts he'd be happier. Although, he does get hours of "entertainment" scooping up rocks and spitting them out on the convicts. But, he also bashes himself on the glass and has scraped himself up pretty good getting the "Racies" and hitting the top.
