instead of using biomax or ehfi substrate pro....

Does anyone see why I could not use CC is my bio media?

crushed coral raises your ph..if your doing hard water setup that would be fine....

I have heard of other people using it. Should help keep your PH in line too, might not be the best of you are trying to breed in softer water though.

crushed coral is pretty much calcium so it will raise your ph

yeah I'm doing tangs which like the higer ph....

I like the higher ph...

My main questions is will it be a suitable "bed" for the bio bacteria to colonize in?

the coral has micro pores so its pefect for colonizing bacteria.....whats your tap ph??

its about 7.4...

But I use the seachem tang buffer. I try to keep my tanks around 8.2-8.4 ph

I use it in all my tanks. I just mix it in the gravel.

It helps stabilize your PH.... makes keeping a steady PH easier.... or so I have found. Probably not best for fish who like to breed in softer water….

I understand that the CC helps with that...but I plan on using sand in this tank...

the CC will be in the canister so it will help maintain the higher ph without mixing it in the substrate.

Are you doing sand with the jets??

yeah...

sand is when the jets work the best...

the fish poop will not settle into the sand like it does with gravel...it pretty much stays on top so the jets work alittle better...

or at least this is what I've read on the oh so wonderful internet...

I would bet as long as the CC is in the system it'll raise the pH and being that it's in the canister it'll provide a great place for the bateria and be outta site.

Sounds like a good plan. Let us know how it works out :D

This is probably the best idea I've heard for using CC in a tank. With water constantly flowing over it, it should buffer your tank really well & create a nice bed.
WTG! :second:

I was thinking the same thing. The only thing I would think that might even be a little better is using it in a Fluid Bed Filter. (http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/diy_fbf.php)
