Apistos are a good choice however are a tad bit expensive for the small fish.

Tank mates are pretty vast, basically anything that will not eat them given enough space will exist. If you want them to breed that is another matter but just having them troll around your tank you have many options as long as you are not trying to put something big enough to eat them.

Mine have never messed with bottom feeders they seem to be fine with them, I believe Chris(xtc) has some butterfly loaches in his 55g which has had plenty of dwarfs in it.

I have kept mine with everything from mollies, gouramis and Red Eye - Red Tail Puffers to a variety of tetras....

You can go with Pseudomogil rainbows for the top/middle part of your tank. Another selection is the blue tetra(Conchu's Tetra), ember tetras, cardinal tetras for the middle part of the tanks. Some loaches and cories for the bottom. You even can put some amano shrimp(caridina japonica) as part of your cleaning crew.

If you ever hope to see little dwarfs running around I would stay away from the loaches....

Actually Rainbows are pretty good hunters as well.... both would be tough on any little guys breeding.

Most any community fish will work with the, as for any king of shrimp, better make sure that they are bigger than the dwarf cichlids or they will be a snack.
