We purchased the blue/black filter material from Home Depot as reccomended by others for filter material. I doublechecked, nothing listed on filter, was a solid blue sheet, with black foam on one side/ blue floss type on other. First time we used it, a month ago. Cut to size, and rinsed in water well first, then rinsed in declor water. Placed filter in HOB. About 1/2 hour later noticed all the Angels were gasping at surface, and huddling around the heater. These angels are from Rey, and have been here for 4 months. The sailfins seemed ok. The angels were swimming sideways, down at bottom, looked like they were dying, or drunk( bumping into one another, swimming sideways, upside down, circles, etc) ? Immediately did a water change, removed new filter, and put in carbon filter. Fish wouldn't eat for 24 hrs. All survived, which I was surprised. So we didn't really know what happened.
Well 6 wks later took the same filter material and cut piece for another 40 gallon tank with different group of Reys Angels. Within 15 minutes fish started gasping, hanging around heater, and literally blindly bumping into one another.
Did water change, carbon, etc. Fish did exact same thing as first time.
Different Tank, both established healthy tanks, no other changes, no new fish for 5 months. This blue filter material was in cichlid tank, they were fine- threw it out now.
Not sure what is going on, but wanted to warn everyone that something has changed with the filter material. This is too coincidental to happen to both tanks, same exact symptoms, no other changes.
Please be careful, I am sure if we left this material in the filters the fish would have been dead by morning.

WOW x2!!!

I bet they've added an anti-bacterial/mold agent to the foam backing.

Does the packaging say anything to the affect "Not for Aquarium Use" or something about a bio-guard or anti mold?

Who is the manufacturer?

The package didn't have any statement regarding Aquarium Use, and I checked closely for anything for anti-mold, bio-guard, or any additives. Sorry, threw away package, forgot manufacturer. I think it is the only one that Home Depot sells it retailed for about $5.98.

Yep, that is the one. Have no idea what they did, but it almost killed them. Luckily we caught it in time.

Rey,
Will post pictures of the Babies.... they are doing great and HUGE. Really starting to show color now, and all are perfectly healthy. Except for the filter mishap, never had any problems with any of them. Also they love the new plant Matt started adding to their thank in the last week. Now if I could only tell which are male and female? Anyway I can talk you into coming for a visit and teaching me how to sex them?
I would give you a bunch of free pond plants. :)
