Keller Farms finally got in some Flameback Bleeding Hearts-picked up 30 today to put in with my Retroculus. Not a whole lot gets me excited in the hobby anymore....except picking up new species that Ive never kept.

Ohhh I like those. Are you Retroculus shy or inactive? I don't know much about them.

Very interesting. I've seen, and considered keeping, the normal bleeding heart tetras, but have never seen the Flamebacks before.

Is the red on top a simple color variation, or is it a different species all together?

I was wondering that as well

The retros are somewhat skittish when movement is spotted outside of the tank-thus why I wanted to let them feel more at home. Now that Ive added these, they are very active and not skittish at all.

As for whether they are a new species, etc--yes. They were discovered in 1993 and are rarely imported. There are three types of "Bleeding Hearts': The common one-H. erythrostigma, The one with no color-H. socolofi, and this one-H. pyrrhonotus.

Keller Farms has another 60 or so up there at $2.99ea. He gave me a deal since I bought a bunch. Very cool fish. I recommend it for any community tetra tank.

And..they really do look like the photo.
