View Full Version : Drift wood question from a newbie

I was/have been reading and re-reading these threads and trying to soak everything up. I have seen a lot of talk about drift wood, and realized that I have a very nice piece sitting around the house. My aunt sent a "decoration to me a few years ago, with drift wood as the center piece". I do not know the actual name of it (or what it started out as), but I do know that it came from a stream in West Virginia. It is a really nice piece and by checking some of the prices on ebay, it might be worthwhile for me to have her sent down several pieces.
Sorry for the long thread, my question is if anyone knows if this is/would be safe for one of my tanks, and if so, what I should before putting it in.
Thanks for any and all replies.
Mike

Boil the driftwood, that will make sure that its clear of any bad things.
You should also probably soak it for a week or so , so that it will be come waterlogged and sink instead of float.

boiling it is good and a light bleach bath also helps... just be sure to use a ton of dechlorinater.

I'd also recommend boiling and light bleaching, then run it through the dishwasher a few time (without soap of course) to help rinse it off afterwards.
Having her send down a few pieces wouldn't be a bad idea!

Not to take over the thread, but can the same thing be done with rocks?

I throw everything in my dishwasher, plants, rocks, flower arrangements that get dusty, but I run them once with the soap, then again without. Works like a charm!

Thanks Joey, I am not really looking for any right now. I was reading some of the post and saw a lot of threads about drift wood. After a few minutes it dawned on me that I have a huge piece that is in the way more than anything. I think it would look really nice in my 75 gallon (It will just barely fit).
I might look into selling or giving some away (maybe a little help on shipping cost) in the near future. My aunt and uncle own a cabin that sits right by a mountain stream. They can find truck loads pretty much anytime (however, they may not be interested in the work that it requires to ship that much). I will keep the forum in mind when I call and talk to her.

Cause we're always on the look out for good, cheap drift wood. Not to mention it could help fund you new addition (fish ;)) and also give you a good bargaining chip for making trades for other equipment you need instead of spending cash... trade for it :D.
