I FINALLY got the tank setup, although, I haven't quite filled it to the top yet... being on a 2nd floor apartment has made me a bit nervous to fill it up all at once... (despite everyone telling me it should be OK... I'm just a worry-wart)
:o ...but each day I add a couple more inches of water... (4 more to go... LOL!!!)

Anyway, here are some pics (sorry they aren't the greatest):

LOL!!! Yeah, what's a 1000 lbs right? ;)

Actually, it wasn't as hard as I initially thought it was going to be...
I cut it in 3 pieces....(basically cutting the tree out) then I siliconed in the right and center piece... once that dried, I siliconed in the left side and it was set. I also added a net mess on the back sides (since it's not 100% flush against the sides of the tank.) to keep the fish from wandering to the back.

Also, if there's anyone out there looking for a pretty strong powerhead pump for their UGJ... I found a Via Aqua on eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=230147033592&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=013)for $29.99 "Buy It Now", and $13.00 in shipping that's rated at 740GPH... this thing is awesome and my fish love it!!

;)

Exactly, you're on the second floor, so what do you care? (fish chit flows downhill so to speak).

The install looks really nice. Even on the #2 closeup pic above I can't see any seams.

Dang, that does seem like a good deals on a pump.

BTW... love the music in the vid ;)

I don't think I'll add plants... and I wanted to add more rocks... (for more caves), but I'm being very careful with how much more weight I keep adding seeing as I'm on a 2nd floot apt.

Actually, not yet... I've got about 2 inches to go. I had been doing alot of running around this past week, so I figured I'd wait until this weekend. This way, I'm home and paying attention when it goes through the floor... LOL!!!

Actually I think it should be fine... the guy I sold the 58 gallon tank to said he has a 150 in his 2nd floor apartment.

Yeah, well I finally went to fill it up last weekend, and because I don't have glass tops yet on the tank, I was getting some splash outside from the fish and the fluval jets... the one thing that sucks is that because of the background, I can't run my filter intakes and jets on the back, I actually have to run them on the sides... meaning, I need to get custom glass tops made to allow room for the hoses. Not to mention, I seem to be getting alot of quick evaporation... so my levels are constantly dropping.... I've checked for leaks, and have been fortunate enough not to find any. I wonder if the quicker evap is because the tank is completely open at the top?

Anyway, once I get the tops, the water level will definitely come back up.

:D

AndrewH
04-10-2008, 08:51 AM
Oh yeah, open tops definitely evap a lot more then with glass hoods.

I really like the moonlighting. How many LEDs do you have on there? Seems like quit a few, but not overly bright.

Gives a nice "moonlight through the water" effect.

EAST_TX_RN
04-10-2008, 08:54 AM
Those are great photos of your moonlighted tank, Dave! So far as the evaporation goes, more surface area=more evaporation. You certainly have a problem with getting a lid due to your configuration! Wish I had a cool background though!

http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/diy/42194-sliding-glass-top-how.html

This link describes how to build sliding glass tops. It seems that you could use this configuration on your tank, but make them slide side to side instead of front to back.

The last time I bought a glass hood kit it same with little plastic edging to fill in the back gap which you could cut the plastic around the filtration, heater, etc.

Seems that might work for your configuration.

Love the Moonlights! It looks great!

Gypsy_Guitarist
04-10-2008, 09:12 AM
Yeah, that's what I was thinking... and of course when I took these pics, it had already dropped another inch or two since dropping the level myself.

As for the LEDs, there's about 13-14 leds on a 48" strip... I bought these off a guy on e-bay... made him an offer of $30, and he took it:

Here's his ebay store:
http://stores.ebay.com/Other-side-of-the-moon

As for the tops, I have 2 choices... I found these online for $35
http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=3790
and thought that I could buy a glass cutter and try to cut out the room I need myself...

or I can have it professionally done.
I spoke with one of the guys at the Fish Gallery this weekend, and said he could probably have that done for me for about $60-$70.

So right now, I'm trying to debate on how good of a DIYer I am... LOL!!

The plastic at the top of this picture is what I was referring to. This is the exact hood tops I bought (for a 55 gallon). Simply apply the "sliding top" parts and presto... custom glass tops that slow down the evap!!

Screw that noise...Go get some plexi/acrylic from Lowes or Home Depot and cut it to fit.

You can get the hinges from your LFS if you really need it.....

How did the tank top turn out?

Turned out great!!! bought the glass and molding at Lowes... they cut the glass to my measurements... went home and installed it sliding side to side. The only thing I need now are handles... and maybe something to cover or smooth out the edges
(I can already see myself slicing a finger :( )

I also bought a glass cutter so that I can actually cut the back corners of the glass off so that I can actually close the top all the way without the filter hoses blocking it. Just haven't gotten that far yet. :o

When I had the tops made for my 58... all the glass shop did was use a fine grit sanding wheel and a 18V cordless drill. It literally took him 15 seconds to clean the edges.

As far as the handle... I had the above mentioned glass guy cut two 2x2 pieces of scrap glass. I epoxied them on top of each other and then expoxied the stack to the top of the glass lid.

Works like a champ.

Gypsy_Guitarist
04-28-2008, 09:08 AM
Well... here are some updated pics...
I finally got my handles in, so I was finally able to complete my glass tops. I had decided to go with the sliding tops that Andrew recommended... the girl at Lowes was really cool and did a great job cutting the glass to my specs. Unfortunately, I was left doing the special cut for my side hoses.... and originally I had planned to make a straight cut, but as I went to break off the piece, (as you can tell) the inside cut didn't take and it wound up making a curved break... but still didn't look too bad. So I duplicated the curve on the 2nd right side as well.
