My wife and I went to FG the other night and bought ourselves some red jewels and we got to talking to one of the guys there about arowanas. He was saying that if you have an arowana in a aquarium, you'd be lucky to get it up to a foot in length. He recommended at least a 75 gallon and we have a new 125. Everything I read says this is bunk, what do you guys think about this?

agreed - you are looking at at 240 minimum. Techinically they will be happier in bigger, but most in captivity are likely not in larger. The best best is if you have a pond that will not get to cold. Can we say indoor pond anyone?

for a 75-125 gal you can house a small arowana from 2 - 12 inch :D

silver arowana need a foot print at least 8'x3' and a high of 20'' or more making a bare minimum tank of 8'x3'x20''= 300G! they usually reach the length of 30-36'' in captivity, some being keep in big pond grow more than 40''!

I had a silver in my 350 (8x3x2). He was probably about 24" when I sold him to a member on here. Even in that footprint, it seemed almost too small. He slowly paced the tank back and forth 24hrs a day. Very cool fish but I felt like I was holding him back in even a tank that size.

Same here, that's why I had to get rid of mine... started out at about 8" in a 100G and in about a year grew to about ~16" +, didn't realize he would grow that fast in a short amount of time..

lol, you seem to know more about salt than fresh!
BTW, if any one want to see how big these can get in a good tank size, go to Dallas world aquarium, those silver in there must be close to 4ft!

125 would work for short term. If you plan to have arowana I would by a lot Niger tank within the next 6 months to a year tops. I have one in a 135 but I am planning on buying a 250 plus tank by tax return time.
