View Full Version : Floating food container

My tank is drilled and has 2 overflows. When I started out feeding these fish when I first got them, I fed sinking food. Apparently I made them scared of coming to the top for any reason. Whenever I would try to feed flakes or any other floating food, it would go strait for the overflow and would muck up the filters. I finally had Robyn go and get me a cross stitching hoop the other day to make a floating food container to keep the food from heading strait to the overflows. Works pretty good, instead of attaching it to the side I just let it float 24/7 and drop the food in the ring. It keeps it contained and floats all over the top. Whenever it gets to the return lines it will shoot the food out of the container and that is helping them get closer to the top of the tank without freaking out.
Has anyone else ever had this problem with fish scared of the surface? Are my lights to bright, or did they just get to used to the sinking food?
Either way just over the last 2 days it has helped, they are going for the food in the ring at the surface.
Just thought I'd pass this along wondering if anyone else has encountered it.

I haven't experienced the problem with my fish being scared to go to the top for food, but I have had quite a bit go through the overflow. The ring is a good idea. May have to give it a try.

That was pretty damn smart of you to think of using that hoop to hold the food together! I don't have the same problem as you but I do have a problem with my Red Empress and blue haps being skiddish when I go to feed. They won't feed until I leave, and I am not used to that. I also have a problem with them eating the Dainichi Veggie Deluxe, they just don't care much for it. They do love the Color Supreme. Of course, my plecos love the Veggie Deluxe.

Very good. I've seen the feeding rings for sale in stores, but making your own is best. Keeps it all nice and tidy too!

flake will sink if you submerge it. Floating stick or pellets will float like a bobber. Good idea on the ring.

I have got to get out to a LFS soon, I am so clueless to a lot of fish equipment!

Mix the flake in a bit of water and pour it in the tank, it will sink then! That works perfectly on my 200.

i like that idea. could save quite a bit of waste here. usually my turtle waits until all the food is in the water before flopping off the dock. which totally sinks half the food. my fish try to get it all, there is just no way.

Heh, and a finger to the backside of the turtle before adding the food could, too! :hehe:

I don't even want to know what that would smell like.

To make my feeding ring, I sliced about 1/2" off the top of a can koozie. Push it to the side of a tank and it stays there. Works pretty well.
