What do we have that's... less colorful.
I'm trying to move away from guppies, endlers, platies.. what are my other options?

Goodeids. I know there used to be some folks around here with them, but they fell from the planet. I am looking for some right now.

There are gabillions of kinds of gambusia (mosquito fish).
Also, check out limia.

Some of the wild swordtails and mollies are not colorful.

If I'm not mistaken Donkey had posted some for free, and I think Fishdaddy did also.

hmm.. first of all wow. Thanks guys, really knowledgeable group. :exactly:
Where can I get fish like those suggested?
What about prolific, to some degree, smaller fish.. not necessarily live bearers but easy to leave them alone in the tank and let them breed?

some anableps would be a cool addition to your turtle tank...

Neolamprologus multifasciatus would be good choice, those guys breed like rabbits. Just provide plenty of shells for them.

Mollies are pretty nice. Maybe I'm weird but I think ballooned mollies are the cutest.

anableps are the ones that yall have in your plants area right? or in the turtle tank? It says they are brackish, do yall have them set up that way? I like that they're schoolers.
Neolamps look promising, what do they run?
They will be for the turtle tank so I don't want to lose any sleep if I lose a couple

I can easily catch western mosquito fish in the creek near my house whenever I want to (though I haven't been down there since the drought started...) they breed pretty quickly (I think), are very easy to take care of, are a kind of brown to silver color, and I've never seen one more than about an inch and a half long, though I think they can get bigger.

There are also Eastern mosquito fish, which are about the same but larger and more aggressive, and I think a little harder to find.

Yea they are the cool looking fish with their eyes sticking out of the water in our turtle tank. They do well in brackish but can be converted to full fresh like we have at the store. We had about 6 in there at one time and now we have 1 left and just got 1 from a trade in. I spoke to a guy that bought 3 of them awhile back and he told me they do fine in fresh and his have even spawned a couple of times.
I think they are $10-$15, not sure but don't quote me on it haha. Best bet is going with Dane at R2R, that's where I got mine awhile back.

these are for stock or fish ponds to keep mosquitos out. very prolific breeders! do not release into the wild!!
bring a bucket or bag, as many as you want, as I am closing down my pond.

If anyone knows an LFS that has something meeting this criteria in stock, please let me know.
