You can see in her reflection how round and smooth her belly is but I don't know, she's really big.

She's been hanging out at the bottom all day, I don't think she's even eating but she seems fine. She's holding herself upright and she responds when I open the lid or come up to the tank.

I think I'm fixing to put her in a breeder net. She's moving from place to place...do they look for a place to have babies? I don't know...she looks like it though so I'll be back in a minute!

OK, she's in a bnet and not liking it one bit, lol.

Guppies, as said before, are like rabbits, except they have more at once! It doesn't matter how many females you have...it only takes one male to at least triple the load. You will have babies in every nook and cranny and eventually, they aren't so cute.
You can feed them pulverized flakes (put them in a baggy and crush them into dust) from pretty early on.
They like floating plants, even in the net...instinct to hide and all that jazz.
If you want to keep tons of babies, I suggest two bnets one for fry and one for expecting.

Have fun and remember, you can't save them all!

Bad news...

She died sometime between 9:30am and 5 minutes ago. It looks like she popped, literally. There was hole in her belly with brown fluid of some sort coming out. She smelled really bad when I netted her too.
Other than that, there weren't any babies. I guess that's a good thing as they would've died too since she never had them.

I am so sorry Brandy...I'm just glad it happened here and not in front of your girls.

The Barb still wants to go home with you though.;)

Misty, sounds like she had septicemia. Unless it's caught very early, not a whole lot you can do to change the outcome. Sorry.

I put wisteria and duckweed in my 135 for the babies to hide in. Does a great job! Blake can hook ya up with duckweed. He loves the stuff! :hehe:

With this septicemia, I've had her for a few weeks now...could she have had it that long? The water she was in has good numbers and the Barb is still healthy as could be.
I'm wondering about the breeder net though. I took it out and sat it in a bowl with a drop of food coloring in the water, it didn't seep into the bnet. Could it be that she wasn't getting any/enough oxygen in it. It's a brand new net and hasn't been used...

Quote from http://www.fishforums.net/content/Common-Livebearers/227424/Pregnant-Guppy-Problem/...

"Septicemia- A condition where bacteria gains entry into the fish's body through wounds or the stomach. The bacteria can cause failure of the internal organs, damage to body tissue, blood vessels, and result in recognizable symptoms. This often results in internal bleeding, due to the fluids filling the fish's abdomen. Dropsy may occur as a result. The problem with this type of situation is that the bacteria is present inside the fish and safe from the antibiotics you would place in the water. It could be the result of another infection or caused from dirty water. Symptoms: Clamped fins, bulging eyes, red bellies, eroding, reddened fins, lack of appetite, and fish showing signs of being sluggish or exhibiting sluggish behavior. Treatment: It is best to feed the fish antibiotics rather than using the kinds you place directly into the water. Placing the ill fish in a hospital tank is advised while administering treatment. Check your local petstore for some good medicated food or check for antibiotics if necessary. Septicemia is fatal if not treated immediately!"

With her being pregnant, her immune system doesn't fight as well as it otherwise would. So, it's possible she was somehow injured after you got her and it advanced. I recall reading where the fish is very foul smelling and that's what tips me in this direction. I had a molly pass that reeked when I got her out of the tank and everything pointed to septicemia. The guys just would not leave her alone and I think she was injured before I isolated her. Since then, I'll feed medicated food to them three times a week just to prevent anything like that from happening again. I'm probably overdoing it, but I personally don't want to smell that again!

You can never rid all the bacteria in your tanks, so I'm sure it's nothing you could have prevented. Breeder nets as well as the plastic breeder tanks don't really allow for a lot of circulation, so I will move them around a few times a day.

Thank you for that...I'd never heard of it.

due to the fluids filling the fish's abdomen.
When I netted her, not only was there a hole, but she was hollow. I mean there was literally nothing but that brown fluid in her. There's no way the Barb got to her and there was nothing in the net, not even poop. So I guess that quote above would explain what happened.

Makes me sad to know she suffered like that. I guess moving her into the bnet didn't help either.

Unfortunately, we can't save them all and can't help them all. We continue to learn and do the best we can. That's all they ask of us. http://www.pushupstairs.com/images/emoticon/animal/goldfish.gif
