Hi guys, I have a 55 gallon community tank. I just changed my substrate to soilmaster from white(ugh) gravel. I guess the water around here is super hard and I'm not sure as to what I should stock my tank with. Right now I have 4 amano shrimp, a male and female orange swordtail with their babies and 3 otocinclus. I was planning on putting neon or cardinal tetras and rummynose tetras in, but apparently they require very soft acidic water. I currently have hard, neutral water(7.0) and I have no idea what to put in the tank. I am going to planting it tomorrow, although I am not sure what with yet.
I guess what I want to know is, can tetras comfortably handle neutral, hard water, or am I up the creek? I as really hoping to get some colourful, peaceful community fish that stay small. My number one concern is making sure my fish are in ideal conditions, so, what do you guys think? Oh yeah, and NO guppies :p:

I would plant the tank and not add additional fauna for at least 10-14 days.

As long as what you buy is local water conditions for the most part won't matter. My Discus are basically in tap water.

Th guy at Fish Gallery told me tetras have been tank raised for generations so they should be ok in local water conditions. Cool. Ima try some rummynose and neons I guess. Do you guys know if cardinals are local raised? I read online most cardinals are hard to breed so are therefore wild caught and super fragile.

I have neons with no problems but my friend/neighbor with the same water conditions (high pH/hard water) can't keep a cardinal alive for anything. She's tried them from multiple sources and they don't live more than a week or so before dying. Her research showed the same thing yours did as far as them being more sensitive.
