I have seen a variety of fish housed with Oscars. Everything from mollies and angels to other South Americans.

tsunderl
03-02-2008, 10:28 PM
Yeah, but if you have a pacu with an oscar, you've met your limit. That pacu will outgrow the oscar in no time and keep growing!

Voice of experience here. :)

Pretty limited with a Pacu in the tank.

I had this combination and you are at your limit! When I got my pacu, she was about 10". She grew to 14" in about four months! About all you can add is a large pleco.

I had mine in a 135 and they were outgrowing it when I rehomed them. I was running three canister filters and doing twice weekly water changes just to keep the tank clean.

Here's some links on pacus. I don't mean to come off as mean, but pacus are one fish that should not be sold due to their potential size. I was lucky and found my pacu a home with a 500g indoor pond which is ideal.

Yeah... Splash is correct! Pacus are mostly plant eaters. My oscar sure made quick work of feeders though.

:confuzeld:
Yeah this is what happens when stores sell "little pacus, that really no one should keep in an aquarium. They end up becoming the next invasive spieces, since unconcerned people will just dump them in the nearest lake, stream, river, or pond.
I love oscars, they are very intellegent & interactive fish. But I'm not willing to make the big tank committment to have them yet. Have you tried giving your oscars a ball or toy to play with? I've seen some videos of Oscars playing with a ping-pong ball before.

Not that good of a deal. I paid 800 for my 300 tank only at glasscages.com. and don't have any complaints!

zambine
07-08-2008, 10:48 PM
I will second everyone's comments on the pacu. I bought two at petsmart about 6 months ago and they were about 3 inches. The lady told me they would get big but didn't warn me just how big they get. She gave me a "deal" for both because no one would buy them. Fast forward to now and when they both got around 6"-7" long in my 55g one ended up killing the other and then I had to give the survivor to petco for adoption.

I have also seen where people call them "tank busters" because they are so powerful that if they get spooked they can run into the side of the tank and break it!

biggin
07-09-2008, 08:28 AM
A little far fetched IMO, I can tell you a decent 100g tank and a hammer and you will have a hard time breaking it.

Especially with water in it.

I would go a long the lines that if you have one big enough in a 55g or something it would jump out before hitting the glass, and you will be a fool for having one that big in a 55g.

Just my opinion.

If you live on the Fort Worth side Keller Farms has some decent prices on big tanks that they can order to their store. They are the Ocean View brand and as far as I have seen they are well built. They also have a few big tanks at the shop that are used and new. I would call them for a price. I got my 140G tall there for $450.

convicts work well in w/oscars. so do jd's, blood parrots, generally anything that is big enough that they don't get turned into a snack. my rule of thumb is half their size is safe. Get rid of the pacu, they are the biggest pains. their cuteness wares away as soon as you see your other fish discomforted by the big dumb fish that keeps annoying them. Not to mention expect them to grow a foot a year and poop more than any common pleco could ever dream. BIO LOAD will drive you crazy also they NEVER quit eating. Not to sound like a hater but I really don't like them anymore. regardless of what you hear 400 gallons is a min for a pair of these fish w/out the oscars. I love big s. american fish, just not these guys.

masroberts9
09-12-2008, 02:03 PM
I had a jack that was almost as big as my oscar in with the oscar. The oscar almost died. maybe i had an extra mean jack.....ask texascutie she has it now. i think if i had left the jack in for one more day the oscar would be dead she was beaten up so bad she had no use of her left gills, her left fin, and about 1/3 of that left side was covered in open wounds. I treated the oscar and about 3 days the wounds were mostly healed and a couple days after that she was completely healed.

zoohouse
09-12-2008, 03:24 PM
Some are "Hannibal" like i must agree. Then again i have had o's that that acted like back street brawlers. Every fish has its own personality. I once had a convict that liked to hide in the cover and dart out and sneak attack much much bigger fish, luckly for him they weren't to interested in him.(1' tiger shovelnose got him eventually, he was prob. close to 5" himself)

ambitionz
09-12-2008, 04:55 PM

masroberts9
09-12-2008, 05:10 PM
yeah oscar have personality and they are like bug zappers. if a bug gets in...just open the lid to the tank..and the bug will fly in and never be seen again.

texascutie84
09-12-2008, 05:13 PM
Yeah I do have blue now, in a tank by HIMSELF. I do have two JD's in with my O's and Pacus but that one has a totally different personality. He entertains us at night with his antics.

masroberts9
09-12-2008, 05:23 PM
there you have it. most jds would probably work. but i got some reyrey and tried to them in and the oscar went straight after them. probably Blues fault. none were eaten i gotem out and into another tank.

masroberts9 added 0 Minutes and 33 Seconds later...

my oscar has never gone after non feeders like that before.

masroberts9 added 1 Minutes and 11 Seconds later...

hell she doesnt go after feeders that hard either.

zoohouse
09-13-2008, 09:14 PM
Pacu are interesting fish, comical. I usually try to keep a cat or two in my amazon tank for variety. they also help keep the bottom stired up. I have even kept large ropefish, clown loaches, blood parrots, coppernosed brim, giant malaysian prawn, fire/tiretrack eels, ect with my o's. The key is making sure you have proper cover and they are the right size for the introductions. I think variety is the spice of life.:3s:

ambitionz
09-14-2008, 10:46 AM
update on the 3rd oscar he still like 3" or 4" hes not growing but its very active is there any midget oscars? because this one is midget hes like the large ones they sell at petsmart

zoohouse
09-14-2008, 10:51 AM
Never heard of a dwarf oscar. Careful he could have parasites that are keeping him from growing. Some do grow slower and not as big.

zoohouse added 2 Minutes and 45 Seconds later...

The "little fishes" take offense to the midget reference. Little Swimmers might be misleading though. So lets stick to the dwarf tag

ambitionz
09-14-2008, 11:23 AM
have you heard of a oscar not growing before? i bought them 3 at the same time at the same size and this is the only one that stayed like that i had to move him because he was laying in the gravel at the bottom long time ago but he looks like hes doing fine now should i treat him with something for parasites?

zoohouse
09-14-2008, 11:47 AM
Could be para. Then again it could also be a genetic deformity. I have actually had female o's that grew pretty slowly. Test for parasites first before you start treating anything as sometimes treatments can do irrepairable damage. It could also have a weak appettite compaired to the others. And with the rate at which they grow a little difference in food intake could be big difference in growth pattern. Looks like i could of ended up giving you more questions than answers. Good luck

zoohouse added 4 Minutes and 19 Seconds later...

Fish that have parasites tend to spend alot of time at the bottom, but that is usually followed by death not recovery. Flukes don't tend to be as deadly for o's as other fish and have been known to live with them for a long time. You might want to closely examine the others and look for signs of infection as parasites tend to effect all the inhabitants of a tank.

ElijahTurtle
09-14-2008, 11:55 AM
Most likely it is a matter of the other two out competeing it for food. If you have room to move it to another tank & let him grow on his own, he might catch up to the other two. It could be an internal parasite of some sort, but if you got them from the same place at the same time, then it would seen the others would be affected as well. The other noticeable thin would be a matter of the fish appearing weak or emaciated, but you didn't mention that it looked unhealty.
It's also possible that it could be a genetic defect that makes it a "runt of the litter"

"ima" put my money on the lack of, or reduced nutitional intake vs the other fish though. :hehe:
